Knights drop first home and WCCBL game. Bells beat Corvallis 3-2.
June 21, 2007Bellingham gained a game on Corvallis by salvaging its series finale with the Knights at Goss. The Bells improve to 3-3 and the Knights drop to 5-1. Southpaw Paul Applebee of UC Riverside turned in a quality start to earn the win. Closer Greg Krause of University of Utah pitched a scoreless ninth to register the save.
WCCBL co-Player of the Week Jerad Thompson of Mt. Hood CC was touched up for two runs and was relieved by Mike Cusick of Western Oregon in the 4th. Cusick tossed 5 innings and gave up only one run, but took the loss.
Corvallis bats stayed cold as the Knights could only muster 7 hits and 2 runs. Second baseman Josh Hogan of Mt. Hood CC and centerfielder Matt Wyckoff of George Fox collected RBI singles. Wyckoff went 2 for 4 on the night.
"We didn't execute tonight. Our pitching wasn't very good and that's what we've been relying on," said Coach Dorey following the Knights first WCCBL loss. "There wasn't a lot of passion tonight."
When asked about his lineup Dorey said, "Yeah I moved things around. I wanted Drew (Garcia) to see more fast balls so we moved him down in the lineup."
"The most important thing is our mentality, and I think we're a healthy team right now," said Dorey.
Despite the loss, fans had a great time at Goss. "I thought it was awesome," brothers Ty (12) and Chase (10) Fortmiller said. "Best season ever!" The two brothers got free posters compliments of Pepsi and got their posters signed by the players after the game. 272 fans braved another cold night to catch the Knights.
Corvallis heads out on a 8-day, 9-game road trip starting Friday in Moses Lake. The Pirates lead the East with a perfect 6-0 record.
The Moses Lake series will not be broadcasted by KTHH. AM 990 will resume its broadcasts on June 25 at Wenatchee.
