Knights drop final regular season series, Elks beat Corvallis 5-3.
August 3, 2007Southpaw Jordan Post (pictured) of PLU will start Sunday versus Bend in the Knights' final regular season game of the 2007 season. The Knights will travel home after Sunday night's game and then travel to Silverdale, Washington Monday morning for their first divisional playoff game vs. the Kitsap BlueJackets. Kitsap lost last night at home to Spokane 4-2.
On Sunday night, Corvallis was bit by poor defensive play for a second consecutive night. Bend scored two in the fourth off reliever Kevin Castner and then another two in the fifth off the right-hander from Cal Poly SLO. The two runs in the 5th, which turned out to be the difference, were unearned as the Knights committed three consecutive errors all with two out.
In the sixth, first baseman Mark Samuelson of UC Riverside blasted a monster three-run homer to center. The homer cut the Knights deficit to 4-3. However, Corvallis could not muster another rally after loading the bases following Samuelson's homer and being denied the tying or go ahead runs when Elks' second baseman Pat Pezet of Cal Poly SLO made a spectacular play on a ground ball by catcher Rocky Gale of UP to end the inning. Pezet fielded the ball up the middle, stepped on second and threw to first with his momentum taking him towards the outfield for the inning-ending double play. It was one of three outstanding plays by Pezet denying the Knights hits and in Gale's case RBIs.
Jim Murphy of WSU went 2 for 2 to raise his team leading batting average to .346.
Today's final regular season contest can be heard on 990 AM The Legend. Game time is 6 pm. Mike Parker, the voice of the Beavers and Knights, will call all the action.
Eric Massingham of Cal Poly SLO (1-1 W/L, 2.18 ERA) will start the Knights' first playoff game at Kitsap.
