Knights take series at Moses Lake, beat Pirates 4-3 in 10 innings to improve to 9-6 in the WCCBL.

Eddie Orozco (pictured) of UC Riverside turned in a quality start allowing only two hits and one earned run. The frosh right-hander from Riverside, California struck out 7 over six innings and left down 2-0 as the Knights offense was stymied by Tyler Anderson of University of Utah.

Anderson came into the game with a 13.50 ERA and opposing batters were hitting .438 vs. the southpaw, but the Knights had no luck against Anderson collecting only four singles and no runs over six innings.

However, the Knights rallied in the eighth vs. the Pirates' bullpen as Doug Cherry of University of Washington reached on an infield single with out, Billy Clontz of Mt. Hood CC was hit-by-pitch and Logan Lotti of Sierra College walked to load the bases.

Frosh second baseman Davis Duren of Oklahoma State scored Cherry on a sacrifice fly plating the Knights' first run.

Soph outfielder Adam Melker of Cal Poly followed with a walk to re-load the bases.

That brought up junior catcher Alex Burg of Washington State, 1 for his last 24. Burg delivered, stroking a two-run game-tying double to right-center.

Tied 3-3, head coach Brooke Knight turned to Taylor Starr of Oregon State to start the bottom of the eighth.

Starr loaded the bases by hitting the lead-off hitter, making a poor decision on a sac bunt turning the play into a fielder's choice putting runners on first and second, and after a sacrifice bunt, Starr hit another batter. But the frosh from Longview, Washington toughened up and struck out the next two Pirates to escape the inning unscathed.

It looked like the Knights would take the lead in the ninth when John Wallace of OSU, who came to bat 2 for his last 26, singled to right and Josh Hogan followed with a single to left, but Cherry would fly out (advancing Wallace to third), Clontz would strike out with a runner at third, Lotti walked to load the bases and Duren would tap back to the mound for the inning's final out.

Ben Rue of Concordia held Moses Lake in the 9th, forcing the second extra-inning game of the series, thanks to another base stealer gunned down by Burg (his second of the game and sixth of the series).

In the 10th, Melker walked to lead things off. He stole second, and then third after a strikeout of Burg. His steal of third, his sixth stolen base of the season, caught Moses Lake napping as third baseman Brandon Huerta vacated his position after the strikeout by pitcher Nick Stiltner of OSU.

The Pirates then chose to intentionally walk Dean Green of Oklahoma State bringing up Wallace who scored Melker on a fielder's choice ground out to second giving the Knights their first lead 4-3.

Up by one, Rue set down the Bucs 1-2-3 in the 10th-inning, evening his won-loss record at 2-2.

With the extra-inning victory, the Knights took the series, their third series win of the season, and improved their League mark to 9-6.

Shortstop Josh Hogan, a junior-to be at University of Oregon, went 3 for 5.

Duren swiped his league-leading 7th stolen base.

The Knights are now 2-2 in extra-inning and rubber games.

Corvallis now heads home for six games starting with a key series with Bend. Game one is Tuesday, July 1, which is also Pepsi Poster Night. The first 250 fans get posters. Get yours autographed before the game.

As of Sunday morning, the Bend Elks lead the West (and the Knights) by a half-game with a 9-5 record.

Josh Osich of Oregon State is the series opening probable starter. Osich made three relief appearances on the Knights' first extended WCCBL road trip allowing no runs over 1 2/3 innings while striking out 3.
