Ogrin smacks four hits but Knights fall in 12th, 6-4.

Second baseman Scott Ogrin (pictured) had his first four-hit game of the summer but Corvallis fell 7-5 to Victoria in 12 innings on Saturday night in Game 1 of the weekend series.

The Knights thrilled a Cap Night crowd of 1,856 by rallying for three runs in the last of the ninth to tie the game 5-5, forcing extra innings. A walk and three consecutive singles scored one run and loaded the bases; two consecutive sacrifice flies, sandwiched around an error, drew the Knights even.

However, Victoria scored twice with two outs in the 12th. and the Knights couldn't match their earlier comeback magic in the bottom half. Ogrin (Cal Poly in 2017) had a leadoff single, but Michael Farris (UC Riverside) just missed a game-tying homer when he flew out to the warning track in center for the first out and the next two hitters were retired.

Ogrin singled in the second, sixth, eighth and 12th innings and handled eight defensive chances without an error. He has at least one hit in 10 of his last 12 games, with four multi-hit games, and has raised his average 98 points to .333 (23-69).

DH Roman Garcia (San Diego) doubled, scored and drove in tying run in the ninth with a towering sacrifice fly to center field. He has six extra-base hits during an ongoing seven-game hitting streak that includes four multi-hit games.

Center fielder Kyle Nobach (Oregon State) was 2-for-6 with a run and raised his WCL-leading average to .340. Right fielder Cody Hawken (Portland) singled twice, scored, stole a base and had an RBI and Zak Taylor (OSU) singled twice.

Reliever Chris Burkholder (Dartmouth) allowed one earned run in a five-inning stint, his longest outing of the season by two full innings. He has allowed just two earned runs in his last 11 innings over three appearances, with 11 strikeouts.

Reliever Cameron Richman (Portland) added 3.2 scoreless frames, also his longest outing of the summer. He had three strikeouts.

Control problems again hurt the Knights (30-17 overall, 23-17 WCL, 5-8 second half). They issued six walks and hit four batters; Victoria scored twice on bases-loaded walks, raising the Knights' total to seven in their last four games. Two of the hit batsmen scored, as did one who walked.

Victoria (30-10 all, 7-6 second half) won the North Divisions first-half championship to earn an automatic postseason playoff berth alongside the Knights, who captured the South Division's first-half pennant.

The series resumes at 5:05 p.m. Sunday. Lefty Ryley Widell (2-1, 2.82) is the scheduled starter for Corvallis, opposed by Cal Poly righty Austin Dondanville (5-0, 1.48). It is Wilson Motors Night and a Lil Knights Club Game.
