Knights woes continue as Moses Lake beats Corvallis 3-2 in 10 innings.
June 26, 2008Jared Eskew (pictured) of Cal Poly threw six strong innings allowing no earned runs. Two early infield miscues cost the Knights and led to two runs being allowed by Eskew.
Corvallis also continued to struggle with the bats as Pirates' starter A.J. Morris of Kansas State stymied the Knights on two hits over 8 innings allowing only one run on a John Wallace two-out RBI single in the 4th.
Knights' pitching was strong until the 10th when Taylor Starr of OSU was touched up for a second straight outing as Moses Lake's #8 and #9 batters doubled and singled to end the game.
Starr walked the lead-off batter and after a sacrifice bunt gave up a double, but centerfielder Adam Melker of Cal Poly threw a perfect strike to shortstop Josh Hogan who whirled and gunned down the Pirates' runner at home, who had left second late checking to see if Melker would catch the fly ball off Glenn Gray's bat.
Following the defensive gem, Starr gave up a two-out game-winning line drive single to right to Brandon Huerta, Moses Lake's #9 hitter.
Starr took the loss.
Eskew was hurt by a two-out error in the first by Corvallis shortstop Richie Jimenez of Riverside CC allowing the Pirates' first score.
The junior southpaw from Bakersfield, California gave up another unearned run in the third as third sacker Doug Cherry of University of Washington couldn't handle a two-out ground ball extending the inning and allowing Tyler Heil of San Jose State to register a two-out RBI single to put Moses Lake up early 2-0.
Corvallis rallied with a run in the 9th to force extras thanks to Davis Duren's base running. The frosh from Oklahoma State led off with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on another wild pitch.
Duren's stolen base was his league leading sixth steal.
Alex Burg of Washington State was the Knights' defensive star throwing out 5 Pirates base runners in a stellar display of catching.
The Knights are now 1-2 in extra-inning games.
Burg is mired in a 1 for 18 slump and is now hitting .178 with 3 RBI.
Ian Bridges of Sonoma State pinch-hit in the 9th and struck out looking. Bridges continues to struggle hitting .071 (2 for 28).
2007 first-team All-WCCBL selection Josh Hogan of Mt. Hood CC is 3 for 20 over his last six games.
Another All-WCCBLer Matt Wyckoff of George Fox is hitting an anemic .100 (3 for 30).
Corvallis has lost 5 of its last 6 games and 3 straight after starting the season 6-1. The offense has scored 6 runs in the team's last 5 losses.
The Knights hope to break out of their offensive slump Friday night in game two of their three-game set at Moses Lake. Game time is 7:35 pm.
