Corvallis sweeps BlueJackets to take West lead.
July 7, 2007The Knights swept a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Kitsap by the scores of 1-0 and 3-2 to sweep their series with the Jackets. Blake Keitzman (pictured) of Oregon State threw 5 scoreless innings to record the win in game one. Keitzman only allowed two hits while walking 4 and striking out 5.
The Knights pushed across their sole run in the top of the sixth as Braden Wells of OSU led off with a single, went to third on a hit & run single by his OSU teammate Erik Ammon and scored the game-winning run on a no-out sacrifice fly by Matt Wyckoff of George Fox. That's all Keitzman, Eric Massingham of Cal Poly SLO and Kyle Cruikshank of Golden West College would need as they combined to shutout the league's top hitting team the Kitsap BlueJackets. Massingham pitched out of trouble in the sixth and Cruikshank retired the Jackets in order in the seventh to register his team leading 5th save.
In game two, Corvallis jumped out to a 3-0 lead by scoring a single run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth and held on for the 3-2 win and sweep. Mike Koons of San Diego State pitched 6 scoreless innings to earn the victory. Kitsap punched across single runs in the seventh and eighth innings off relievers Matt Way of Washington State and Mike Cusick of Western Oregon. Frosh-to be Greg Peavey of Oregon State slammed the door shut in the ninth as Peavey retired the side in order and struckout the last two batters he faced to earn his first save.
Corvallis won all three games vs. Kitsap by one run.
With the sweep, the Knights improve to 19-10 overall and 13-8 in league. They are now in first place one game ahead of Kitsap and will either be tied with Bend or one game ahead of the Elks depending on the result of this evening's Moses Lake at Bend game.
The team heads home for a Monday night non-league contest vs. Richey's Market American Legion. Legendary Richey's coach Dick McClain will throw out the first pitch. The game is presented by the Corvallis Elks Charity Trust. Game time is 7:05 pm.
You can catch Monday's game on 990 AM The Legend. Mike Parker, the voice of the Beavers and Knights, calls all the action.
