Corvallis escapes with 7-5 victory to take series at Wenatchee.
August 1, 2010Mitch Haniger (pictured) of Cal Poly went 4-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.
The Knights banged out 14 hits on the night and every starter recorded a hit with the exception of third baseman Griffin Boyd of Mt. Hood CC who delivered the game-winning hit, a RBI ground out in the sixth inning that scored Haniger.
Starter Dustin Emmons of UC Riverside earned the win, pitching 6 1/3 innings. The senior-to-be struggled with his command, but battled and kept Corvallis in the game and was rewarded with the victory - his fourth of the season with no defeats - thanks to a masterful relief performance by Eric Young of Riverside CC.
Young registered his first save of the season as the junior-to-be at Delaware tossed 2 2/3 innings and allowed only an unearned run while striking out 5.
Down 1-0, Corvallis scored three runs in the third inning as the offense delivered three consecutive two-out RBI singles compliments of Michael Blake of Mt. Hood CC, David Andriese of UC Riverside and Haniger.
The AppleSox, playing their final 2010 regular season home game before a Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium crowd of 1,490, rallied to tie the game in the fourth, but the Knights responded with two runs in the sixth inning to take the lead again 5-3.
Haniger singled with one out and moved to third on a double to left-center by catcher Corey Davis of Mt. Hood CC. Griffin Boyd then plated Haniger on a ground out and first baseman Matt Boyd of Oregon State scored Davis on a two-out RBI single to center.
The Knights delivered another two-out RBI in the seventh as 2010 Big West Freshman of the Year Mitch Haniger tripled scoring designated hitter Dylan Jones of OSU. Haniger then scored on a passed ball to put Corvallis up 7-3.
Down 7-4, Wenatchee mounted a serious threat in the ninth as the Sox brought the tying run to the plate - the AppleSox best hitter Collin Bennett of Hawaii - with two outs after Clayton Eslick of Gonzaga reached on a single.
Young got Bennett to ground out to second, but first baseman Thomas McCarthy of Feather River College, inserted to replace starting first baseman Matt Boyd after Boyd came up lame diving for Eslick's hard grounder the play before, could not handle the throw from JK Dykes of WSU allowing one run to score and runners to advance to second and third on the error.
With the tying run in scoring position, Young buckled down and induced another ground out to Dykes to end the game and record the clutch save.
Shortstop Matt Duffy of Long Beach State went 3-for-5 and Blake collected two more hits to raise his team-leading WCL batting average to .359.
With the win and Bend's loss to Cowlitz tonight, the Knights extend their first place lead to 2.5 games over the Elks and improve their league-best record to 28-16 and overall mark to 32-16.
Wenatchee clinched the East's #1 seed for the East Divisional Series with Moses Lake's loss at Kitsap this afternoon.
Corvallis took 5 of 6 games from the defending WCL champion AppleSox this regular season.
The Knights travel to Walla Walla tomorrow to face the Sweets in a single game starting at 7:05 pm. Corvallis will return home following the game and welcome the expansion Sweets to Goss Stadium for both teams final regular season three-game series. The series opener is Friday, August 6.
