Knights sweep home opening series vs. Bend.
June 16, 2007Mark Samuelson of UC Riverside went 2 for 2 with a three-run homer and sac fly to lead the Knights to a 6-1 victory over the Bend Elks. Samuelson's blast gave Corvallis a 5-1 lead in the seventh. Freshman right-hander Brad Reid pitched 6 solid innings in his Knights debut. Reliever Brad Kidd pitched the final three innings to register the win.
With the sweep, the Knights improve to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the WCCBL.
Knights pitching handcuffed the Elks as Bend scored only once during the series.
The Knights scored first in Saturday's game as catcher Rocky Gale of University of Portland scored on Samuelson's sacrifice fly to center. Gale advanced to third with one out on Matt Wyckoff's single to right. Gale went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
Corvallis plays the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in an exhibition game on father's day. Salem product Mike Cusick of Western Oregon is the Knights' probable starter. Game time is 5:05 pm.
The Knights inaugural three-game home series drew 987 fans. The total attendance for Saturday's finale was 266.
Corvallis hosts the Bellingham Bells next week with the series opener kicking off on Tuesday, June 19. The Bells took two of three on opening weekend from the two-time league defending champion Wenatchee AppleSox. Tuesday is AM 990 Radio Night. The first 100 fans get portable radios.
