Corvallis drops extra-inning affair to Kelowna 5-2 in 11 innings.
June 21, 2008Southpaw Josh Osich (pictured) of Oregon State was impressive in his Knights' debut. The frosh from Boise, Idaho held the Falcons to one run over 5 1/3 innings. Osich gave up 4 hits and struck out 4 while walking none. The lefty hit 97 MPH in the first inning and his fastball was sitting at 93-94 MPH.
Corvallis took a 1-0 lead in the second on four consecutive singles by outfielder Logan Lotti, catcher Alex Burg, outfielder Matt Wyckoff and third baseman Davis Duren. Duren's RBI single came with the bases loaded. But that's all Corvallis would get after hitting into an inning-ending doubleplay.
Kelowna tied the game in the fourth as UC Riverside's Tony Nix led off with a triple and scored on OSU first baseman Stephen Hagen's RBI groundout.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead in the eighth as Knights' reliever David Stilley of Washington State walked Nix to lead off the inning. Nix then advanced to third on a two-base error by Duren and scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Knights responded in their half of the inning as Adam Melker of Cal Poly led off with a single to left. He advanced to second on Josh Hogan's sacrifice bunt, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on John Wallace's RBI single to right.
Thanks to Wallace's clutch hit, the Knights forced extra innings as Corvallis came up empty in the ninth after getting their lead-off batter on base.
Kelowna came up with a big inning in the 11th to put the game away. It was another lead-off walk that did in Corvallis on this night. Reliever Ben Rue walked Brett Nicholas to get the Falcons started. Taylor Starr of OSU replaced Rue after a sacrifice bunt out. He walked the first batter he faced before striking out the next hitter. With two out, Bob Foersester hit the first pitch he saw from Starr into center for a game-winning RBI single. Kelowna catcher Daniel Pellegrino followed Foerster's single with a two-run double to right-center putting the Falcons up 5-2.
That would be the final score, dropping the Knights overall mark to 7-3 and WCCBL record to 6-2. The Falcons improved to 5-3 in League.
The Knights' pitching staff's string of 25 scoreless innings was broke in the fourth.
Saturday night's game drew 566 vocal fans.
