Knights blow 10-1 lead, prevail 12-11 in extra innings.

First baseman Kevin Kline (pictured) hit his second grand slam in three games on Sunday at Goss.

He added a solo homer and drove in five runs for Corvallis in a 12-11, 10-inning win over the Walla Walla Sweets to earn the series victory.

The Knights (6-3 all, 5-3 WCL) stretched their West Coast League winning streak to four games before a crowd of 912 at Goss Stadium. They go for the series sweep at 12:05 p.m. Monday in the finale of a six-game homestand.

Corvallis broke an 11-11 deadlock in the 10th inning without a hit. Jackson Soto walked leading off; Grant Melker of San Diego pinch-ran and was sacrificed to second. With a 2-0 count on Tim Rausch, he stole third and continued home when the throw from catcher Aldo Ferrante sailed into left field.

A rising senior at Dixie State University who was a PacWest Conference all-star, Kline hit a solo homer in the first to extend his home-run streak to three games in a row. He followed his solo blast with a grand slam in the second inning to give the Knights a 7-1 lead; he also hit a grand slam in an 8-3 win over Yakima Valley on Friday night.

Joe Duffin followed Kline's shot with a homer of his own to cap the six-run rally, giving Corvallis three homers for the second game in a row. They lead the WCL with nine homers and Kline is first in homers (4) and RBIs (12).

"I feel I've been seeing the ball well and making good contact," Kline said. "I'm feeling relaxed and confident and sticking to my routine.

The Knights eventually took a 10-1 lead in the third on a two-run single by Michael Howard, the Knights' final hit of the night. A senior-to-be at Oregon State who joined Corvallis this weekend with the end of spring term, Howard walked, stole second and third and then scored on a groundout in the seventh to tie the score 11-11.

Right-hander Angel Landazuri of UC Riverside made his Knights' debut and limited the Sweets to two runs and three hits and had four strikeouts over four innings before leaving the game after giving up a homer leading off the fifth.

The Sweets then scored again in the fifth and eight more times in the sixth off the Knights' bullpen to take an 11-10 lead. Joey Wise came on to stop the bleeding with 3.2 scoreless innings; he allowed two hits and had two strikeouts. Jackson Lockwood of Portland pitched a perfect 10th and got the win.

"We thought the game might have been over after the grand slam," Kline said. "Then we settled in a little too much. But Grant got the job done on the basepaths."

The crowd of 912 increased the season total to 7,842 in six home dates. That's 504 more than in 2013 through a corresponding number of openings.
