Knights prevail 5-1, complete sweep of Kitsap.

Cole Kreuter (pictured) singled twice, scored, stole a base and drove in a run and Corvallis completed a series sweep with a 5-1 win over Kitsap on Saturday.

A rising sophomore at UC Irvine, Kreuter drove in the Knights first run with a second-inning single. He then scored on a triple by Nick Madrigal (Oregon State) for a 2-0 lead that was more than enough for a resurgent Corvallis pitching staff to protect.

Corvallis (19-15 all, 15-15 WCL) improved to 8-1 in its last nine WCL games and to 11-1 in its last 12 games overall in sweeping its third series of the summer. Kitsap (10-20 WCL) lost its 10th game in a row.

Starter Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine) and relievers Gary Steindorf (Western Oregon), Alex Nesbitt (Washington) and Harrison McGhee (Concordia) combined to strike out 10 and limit Kitsap to one run and five hits. Steindorf got the win, as Bishop did not complete the five innings required for a starter to earn a victory.

The Knights gave up just one run and 12 hits in the series, and struck out 21 in 27 innings. They moved to within two games of idle Yakima Valley (17-13) in the race for the WCL's wild-card playoff berth.

Josh George (Cal Poly) doubled, scored and had an RBI and Emilio Alcantar (Linn-Benton) had the Knights' other RBI.

Saturday's crowd of 1,435 increased the season attendance to 27,669 in 19 dates. The Knights are 3,847 fans ahead of 2014 through a corresponding number of openings.

The Knights host the Willamette Valley Brewers, a team of players from Linn-Benton Community College, at 5:05 p.m. Sunday in their next game. They resume WCL play on Monday with the opener of a three-game series against Klamath Falls at Goss Stadium.
