Wenatchee rally edges Knights 5-2 in series opener.
June 27, 2014Corvallis right-hander Justin Calomeni (pictured) pitched well into the seventh inning before faltering in a 5-2 loss to Wenatchee on Friday.
The sophomore-to-be at Cal Poly who earned the Mustangs' top rookie award, Calomeni allowed only two hits and one run and held a 2-1 lead entering the seventh in his longest outing of the summer. However, a hit batsman and his error on a sacrifice bunt leading off the frame opened the door for a four-run rally that enabled the AppleSox (12-7 WCL) to take the series opener.
Calomeni struck out three, walked one, and all five runs off him were unearned, partly owing to his own miscue. Reliever Chris Bishop went 2.1 scoreless innings to keep the Knights (12-9 all, 10-9 WCL) in the game but they could not mount a comeback.
Corvallis scored both runs in the second inning. Kevin Farley walked with one out, moved to second on Scott Quinlans single, and scored on a Wenatchee throwing error that moved Quinlan to third. Quinlan then scored on Michael Lucarelli's bunt single.
Wenatchee starter Tom Zarosinski, who pitched briefly for the Knights in 2011 and 2013, went seven innings for the win and reliever Calvin LeBrun finished up for his second save. The Knights had no extra-base hits, only six singles overall, and no one had more than one hit.
The series resumes at 6:40 p.m. Saturday. Jackson Lockwood (3-1, 3.85) is the projected starter for the Knights, opposed by Ian Buckles (3-0, 1.42) for Wenatchee.
Friday's crowd of 1,139 on ZOOperstars! Night upped the 2014 attendance to 14,442 in 12 openings, 1,413 behind 2013 through a corresponding number of home dates. The Knights drew a record 43,529 fans last season.
