Southpaws 1-hit Portland Ports.

Left-handers Carlos Rodriguez (pictured), Antonio Gonzales and Greg Mahle combined for a one-hitter in the Knights' 4-0 victory before a crowd of 1,011 at Goss.

WCL Portland Ports right fielder Daniel Walsh spoiled the no-hit attempt with a double to right field with two outs in the seventh of the nonleague game, which was shortened to seven innings by mutual agreement. It came off Mahle, who pitched the final two innings.

Rodriguez went four innings for the win; he struck out two and walked four. Gonzales had two strikeouts in a perfect fifth inning, and Mahle struck out four in his two-inning stint.

The Knights have two no-hitters since the program was formed in 1990, but none since the 2005 formation of the West Coast League.

The Knights (23-19 WCL, 25-19 overall) thus entered the West Coast League all-star break in first place in the West Division, with a narrow lead over pursuers Klamath Falls and Bend. The All-Star Game is Tuesday night at Walla Walla; seven players and coaches Brooke Knight and Connor Lambert will represent the Knights on the West Division team.

One of those all-stars, Stanford-bound catcher Austin Barr, gave the Knights a 1-0 lead by leading off the second inning with his third homer. Nate Roberts followed with a double and was singled home by Alex Michaels, who subsequently was driven in by Nate Esposito's single.

Esposito drove home the final run in the sixth with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. Michaels had three hits and scored twice; Barr had two hits.

The Knights resume WCL play at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday against Klamath Falls at Goss Stadium. That series concludes Thursday; they host the WCL Portland Lobos in nonleague games on Friday and Saturday nights.
