Perez, Nesbitt quiet Wenatchee, Knights sweep.
July 10, 2013Jorge Perez (pictured) and Alex Nesbitt combined for 6 2/3 scoreless innings on Wednesday and Corvallis completed a sweep of Wenatchee with a 6-3 win at Goss Stadium.
Perez turned 20 years of age on Wednesday and he celebrated that milestone with a three-inning save in his longest stint of the summer. He allowed two singles in the ninth inning to bring the tying run to the plate, but retired Brock Slavin on a tapper back to the box for his sixth save in six chances.
A starter at Grand Canyon University the past two seasons and at Corvallis last summer, Perez was moved to the bullpen by the Knights (20-13 all, 17-13 WCL) in 2013 to limit his workload after a busy spring. He pitched 107 innings for the Antelopes, who advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series.
On Wednesday he had three strikeouts and threw 24 strikes in 32 pitches. He has not allowed a run in 10.1 innings over seven appearances despite being sidelined from June 21 until July 3 with a sprained left ankle.
"It's so much fun coming out to close, he said. Adrenaline going I feel like I have everything going for me, pitch-wise, and I'm going out there and just competing.
"That's how I wanted to celebrate my birthday. I love baseball so much I'd die on the mound."
A rising sophomore at Washington, Nesbitt relieved starter Devon Barker in the third with three runs in and runners on first and second. He ended that inning without further damage, added three more scoreless frames before giving way to Perez to start the seventh, and earned his first win.
He threw 40 strikes in 59 pitches and extended his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to eight over his last two appearances. His ERA has dropped from 6.35 to 2.63 in that span.
Corvallis scored twice in the first on RBI hits by Dane Lund and Kevin Kline. It tacked on four more in the second on RBI singles by Lund and Cody Lenahan and a two-run double by Gabe Clark.
The Knights had just four hits the rest of the way but the six early runs were enough for them to record their first sweep of the WCL season. They are 5-1 in their last six league games and moved to within two games of first-place Bend in the South Division pennant race.
Wenatchee (17-13) had won 9 of 10 coming in but was swept for the second time this summer. The defending WCL champions fell two games behind Walla Walla in the North Division standings.
Corvallis opens a three-game home series with North Division leader Walla Walla at 6:40 p.m. Thursday. Right-hander Chris Bishop (0-2, 2.55) is the Knights projected starter; Walla Wallas has not been announced.
