Kelowna snaps Knights 9-game win streak. Falcons blank Corvallis 1-0.
July 9, 2008Adam Melker (pictured) of Cal Poly collected both Knights' hits as Corvallis was shut out by Nathan Pickett of Cal State, Los Angeles.
Junior right-hander Ryan Platt of UC Riverside pitched 5 innings of no-hit ball before getting lifted for southpaw Greg Bobnick of Western Oregon in the sixth.
Daniel Pellegrino of UC Riverside greeted Bobnick with a line single to left to lead off the 6th inning (the Falcons first hit). Colin Walsh of Stanford followed with a sac bunt attempt that first baseman Dean Green of Oklahoma State threw away trying to nail Pellegrino at second. With runners at first and second and no out, Tony Nix of UC Riverside singled sharply to left to score the game-winning run.
That was all Kelowna would need as Pickett dominated the Knights in windy conditions.
Pickett came into the game 0-2 with a 4.98 ERA and the right-hander went 1-6 with a 7.43 ERA with Cal State LA in the spring.
No doubt, this was Pickett's best performance of the year.
Pickett tossed 9 innings allowing two hits while walking two and striking out two to earn his first WCCBL win.
This is the second time Kelowna has shutout Corvallis. The Falcons won the series rubber game in Corvallis by blanking the Knights 2-0 at Goss.
The Knights threatened in the eighth as Melker led-off with a double, but designated hitter Kyle Stalker of Willamette was unable to advance Melker as the left-hand hitting slugger popped up on the first pitch he saw. Melker then stole third, but Green left him there with less than two outs as the frosh from Tulsa struck out swinging. With two out, pinch-hitter John Wallace walked, but the threat ended with the next batter as pinch-hitter Josh Hogan of Mt. Hood CC popped up to end the inning.
Both teams have yet to score an earned run and the combined score of the first two games is 1-1. Kelowna has 9 hits and Corvallis 6 after two games that have been played with wind blowing in hard off Lake Okanagan.
Senior-to be Anthony Carrillo of Long Beach State pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief pitching out of a jam in the sixth.
Bobnick took the loss.
The Knights and Falcons play another rubber game Thursday night at 7 pm at Elks Stadium.
