Rogues win first game against Knights, 7-1.
June 18, 2013Corvallis reliever Jacob Schroeder (pictured) held Medford to three hits and two unearned runs over the final six innings of a 7-1 loss on Tuesday in the first game ever between the teams.
Unable to make it through the second inning in his only other appearance this season because of control problems, the rising sophomore at Washington State rebounded with a stellar effort before a crowd of 1,107 at Harry and David Field. He struck out five, did not issue a walk, and kept the Knights in the game.
However, Corvallis (7-7 overall, 6-7 WCL) couldn't mount a comeback and lost its second game in a row following a four-game winning streak. The Knights dropped into fourth place in the Southern Division, 1/2 game behind third-place Cowlitz, which was idle on Tuesday night.
The Rogues (5-8 WCL), who joined the league as an expansion franchise this season, stung Knights' starter Tom Zarosinski for four hits in a decisive five-run second inning. The big blows were a two-run single by Ray McIntire and a two-run homer by Matt Taylor.
Winning pitcher Mac Acker handcuffed the Knights on three hits over 7.2 innings. Brandon Williams got the final out in the eighth, after the Knights had loaded the bases, and Mason Stidham finished up.
The Knights scored their lone run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Kline. No one had more than one hit, or an extra-base hit.
Game 2 of the series is set for 6:05 p.m. Wednesday. Righty Casey Bloomquist of Cal Poly makes his Knights' debut as their starter.
