Knights crack Crabs. Corvallis sweeps Humboldt to win series.
June 11, 2007Matt Way (pictured) of Washington State tossed a three-hit 7-inning complete game shutout in game one of a twi-night doubleheader vs. Humboldt to earn the 4-0 win. The sophomore southpaw only walked one and struckout 9 Crabs. Freshman Rocky Gale of University of Portland led the offense with 3 hits. Frosh designated hitter Nick Akins stayed hot going 2 for 4 with a RBI double.
Game two was a thriller that featured a furious comeback by the home team and a gutty relief appearance by Kyle Cruickshank of Golden West College. The Knights withstood the Crustaceans late charge and beat the Crabs 8-7 to sweep the doubleheader and take the series. Corvallis took a four-run lead on Jesse Rodgers' two-out, two-run RBI double in the top of the sixth. The Crabs fought back scoring 4 runs off Knights' reliever Brett Brunner of PLU in its half of the inning. With the score tied 7-7, the Knights scratched out a single run in the top of the 7th on the Crabs' fourth error of the game. Up 8-7, Cruickshank pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the 7th to earn the win.
With the victory, the Knights won their fourth consecutive series vs. Humboldt.
Corvallis finished its first road trip with a 4-2 mark and two series wins (Southern Oregon and Humboldt).
The Knights now head home for six home league games starting with the club's inaugural home opener at Goss Stadium on Thursday, June 14 vs. its archrival the Bend Elks. Gates open at 6 pm and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. If you can't make it to the park, make sure to catch opening night on AM 990 The Legend. Nate "the gate" Gorman will call all the action.
On Father's Day, the Knights travel to Keizer to play the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in an exhibition at Volcanoes Stadium.
