Allen's HR caps decisive rally in win over Gems.

Corvallis shortstop Jimmy Allen (pictured) hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run seventh inning that broke a 1-1 standoff in a 5-1 victory over Klamath Falls.

It was the first homer of the summer for Allen, a sophomore-to-be from Cal Poly who had six hits and six RBIs in the three-game set.

It was the fifth win in a row and 11th in the last 12 games for the streaking Knights (37-16, 35-16 WCL), who are 21-4 (.840) in their last 25 league games. It was their seventh win in the last nine days against the expansion Gems (16-32); Corvallis also swept a four-game series at Goss Stadium on July 27-29.

Corvallis won the first two games of the series by a combined 24-2 count but the finale was a pitching duel between Max Beatty of the Knights and Drew Staples of the Gems.

Staples struck out 10 of the first 13 Knights but they broke through for a run in the sixth on single by Matt Nylen, a steal and an RBI single by Cade Gotta.

Beatty extended the Knights starting pitchers streak of scoreless innings to 28.1 with 5.1 shutout innings. He left with a 1-0 lead and a chance to tie the WCL season record for wins (7), but he was not involved in the decision. He struck out four, allowed three hits and did not issue a walk.

A two-out-bad-hop RBI single enabled the Gems to tie the game 1-1 in the sixth off reliever Mitch Patito, but the Knights knocked Staples out with a four-spot in the seventh.

Ryan Gorton walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on David Armendariz's double. Armendariz stole third and scored on a bad throw. Sean Myrom singled and Allen followed with a two-run homer for the 5-1 lead.

Patito (1-1) got the win and Jimmie Sherfy finished with two perfect innings, as he fanned three and threw 14 strikes in 17 pitches.

The Knights will host nonleague games against the Dukes and Ports of WCL Portland tonight and Saturday, respectively. Sebastian Santos of UC Riverside (1-0, 7.00) is tonights scheduled starter; Kyle McNutt of Riverside CC (0-1, 3.29) gets the ball on Saturday.

Corvallis hosts Cowlitz on Monday and Tuesday and then goes to Cowlitz on Wednesday to complete the WCL regular season. It will travel to either Bend or Cowlitz on Aug. 12 for Game 1 of the West Division playoffs; Games 2 and Game 3 (if necessary) will be at Goss Stadium on Aug. 13-14.
