July 14, 2015Chris Clements (pictured) threw six scoreless innings and Corvallis won its fourth consecutive WCL series on Tuesday with a 6-2 victory over Klamath Falls.
The Knights (22-15 all, 17-15 WCL) won their seventh straight WCL game. They have won eight games in a row overall and are 14-1 in their last 15 games against all competition.
Most importantly, they drew within one game of Yakima Valley (18-14) in the race for the WCL's wild-card playoff berth. The Pippins lost 4-1 at Kitsap on Tuesday night.
A rising sophomore at UC Santa Barbara, Clements struck out three, spaced four hits, evened his record at 1-1 and lowered his ERA from 3.11 to 2.31 with his third straight effective appearance. He has a 0.68 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 13.1 innings over that span. "I thought my command was kind of off, but I just making pitches at the right time, and had the guys behind me making plays," Clements said. "It helps having them pick you up when you are not having the best game.
"Spacing [the hits] out is big because if they can chain them together that's when they can get runs. The defense helped me out. Having Andy [catcher Andy Cosgrove] and [pitching coach Connor] Lambert call a good game while executing the pitches I need to" was crucial as well.
First baseman Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine) doubled twice, singled, scored and drove in two to lead the offense. His two doubles gave the Knights eight in two games against the Gems (5-27 WCL), who now have lost 12 games in a row.
Jackson Soto (Oregon State) added a two-run single and Nick Madrigal (OSU in 2015-16) singled twice, stole three bases and drove in a run. Michael McAdoo Jr. (UCSB in 2015-16) had the Knights' other RBI and shortstop Clay Fisher (UCSB) was the pivot man on three double plays.
The Knights broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the fifth. The Gems closed within 4-2 in the seventh, but the Knights got two back in the home half and relievers Dakody Clemmer (Central Arizona) and Ryan Walker (Washington State) closed it out with a scoreless inning apiece.
Tuesday's crowd of 1,158 increased the season attendance to 31,169 in 22 dates. The Knights are 3,622 fans ahead of their 2014 total through a corresponding number of openings.
The series concludes at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday. Corvallis starter is TBA; the Gems will go with righty Riley Moore (1-2, 5.26) of St. Martin's. Corvallis opens a key three-game series at Yakima Valley on Thursday night.
