Quinlan one hit short of cycle in 4-2 Knights' win.
June 26, 2014Scott Quinlan (pictured) singled, doubled, tripled, drove in a run and scored another as Corvallis edged the Mid-Valley Rockets 4-2 on Thursday night.
A rising senior at UC Santa Barbara, Quinlan scored the Knights first run in the second inning after legging out a one-out triple. He then beat out an infielder grounder to knock in an insurance run in the eighth.
Joe Duffin, Alex Smith and Logan Ice had the other RBIs for Corvallis (12-8 all, 10-8 WCL). The Knights fielded a patchwork lineup after arriving home at 7 a.m. on Thursday following Wednesday night's 6-5 West Coast League victory at Wenatchee.
Four Corvallis pitchers combined to four-hit the Rockets, an Area III American Legion program coached by Troy Babbitt, a cousin and co-worker of Knights' skipper Brooke Knight. Austin Sodders went two hitless innings for the victory; Jason Snodgrass gave up one unearned run in the final two innings and earned the save.
Starter Stephen White recovered from early control problems and held the Rockets to one run in the first four innings. Ted Hammond, previously sidelined with a hand injury, made his 2014 debut and pitched a scoreless seventh inning for a hold.
Duffin singled, doubled, scored once and drove in a run and Smith singled twice and had an RBI for the Knights.
Corvallis resumes WCL action at 6:40 p.m. Friday with the opener of a three-game series against Wenatchee. Justin Calomeni (1-0, 2.00) is the projected starter for the Knights; Wenatchee's starter is TBA.
Thursday's crowd of 1,443 upped the 2014 attendance to 13,303 in 11 openings. That's 378 ahead of 2013 through a corresponding number of home dates; Corvallis drew a record 43,529 fans last summer.
