Late Knights' rally falls just short in loss to Rogues.
June 28, 2015Lefty Cameron Bishop (pictured) allowed just one run and three hits over four innings in his first start but a late comeback fell short and Corvallis lost 5-4 at Medford on Sunday.
A rising sophomore at UC Irvine, Bishop struck out three and lowered his ERA from 11.57 to 5.69 in the process. The Knights trailed 1-0 when he was relieved and never tied the game, so he was charged with a tough loss.
The Knights mounted a dramatic comeback, however, after being blanked for seven innings by Medford starter Jackson Bertsch as they broke through for four runs in the eighth inning. Third baseman Cole Kreuter (UC Irvine) and pinch-hitter Andy Cosgrove (Washington) hit back-to-back doubles for the first run and a groundout and an infield single by Nick Madrigal (Oregon State) made it 5-2.
Second baseman Christian Donahue (Oregon State) followed with a two-run homer to draw the Knights within 5-4. The next two batters reached safely but reliever Jamie Flynn ended the inning with a strikeout.
In the ninth, the Knights got a two-out single from Cosgrove to stay alive and pinch-runner Emilio Alcantar (Linn-Benton CC) stole second. Jes Staples (Bellarmine) walked and Madrigal was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Flynn retired Donahue for his first save.
It was the eighth loss in nine games for the Knights (8-14 all, 7-14 WCL), who snapped a franchise-record seven-game losing streak on Saturday night. Medford (8-10) solidified its hold on second place in the South Division and moved 2.5 games ahead of the third-place Knights.
The Knights host the U-19 Colts, a touring Australian all-star team, in a non-counting exhibition at 6:40 p.m. Monday. They start a two-game nonconference series against the Humboldt Crabs at Goss Stadium on Tuesday night.
