Corvallis blanks Sweets 2-0 to take series before a crowd of 1,292 at Goss Stadium.
August 8, 2010Starter Alex St Pierre (pictured) of Lewis & Clark College tossed six shutout innings to earn the win.
St. Pierre, southpaw Ross Pomerantz of Occidental College and frosh Max Beatty of Pacific Lutheran University combined on a 7-hit shutout of the expansion Walla Walla Sweets.
Pomerantz pitched two scoreless innings and Beatty registered his first save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Senior-to-be Alex St. Pierre (2-1, 1.11) allowed five hits while walking none and striking out 4.
"I felt pretty good today, just tried to throw strikes. They're a pretty aggressive team so I just tried to get early contact and all my pitches were working pretty well today so that just made it easier on me," said St. Pierre.
"We've all been playing well lately, pitching well, hitting well, it's all coming together at the right time so hopefully we can just continue and bring home a championship."
Corvallis scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to break a scoreless tie. Outfielder David Andriese of UC Riverside delivered the game-winning hit with a clutch two-out RBI single. Andriese then scored on a double by catcher Corey Davis of Mt. Hood CC.
With the victory, the Knights won its final regular season home series and improved its league-best record to 31-17. Corvallis is 37-17 overall and won the West by 4 games.
Corvallis finished the regular season with the WCL's lowest staff ERA at 2.99 and ended up hitting .267 as a team.
The Knights start the postseason Tuesday vs. second-place Bend at Vince Genna Stadium. Game time is 6:35 pm.
Game two is scheduled for Wednesday, August 11th at Goss Stadium. Game time is 6:35 pm. Reserved tickets for Wednesday's game are now on sale.
"We kind of had a change of attitude after the first couple weeks and I think some guys decided that we wanted to make it a priority to try to win this thing. The guys obviously started to gel and get to know each other. But after a couple of candid clubhouse meetings we got some things sorted out and the guys have really played well since," said Knights' skipper Brooke Knight.
"We've pitched really well and we've matured at the plate so we're right where we were hoping to be going into this thing and it's going to be a lot of fun going to Bend and getting after it.
"I don't think we're going to change a whole lot. We feel real good with Hoover, Mendoza and Emmons starting for us against those guys. The intensity of the game itself, we'll turn it up a notch and just kind of let it all hang out, and leave it on the field and what happens will happen."
A Sunday crowd of 1,292 raised the Knights' total attendance to 29,797 over 30 home dates for a per game average of 993.
