George's big day leads Knights to sweep of 'Cats.
July 5, 2015Left fielder Josh George (pictured) had three hits, scored twice and saved a run with a running catch as Corvallis completed a sweep of Victoria with a 4-2 victory at Goss Stadium.
A rising sophomore at Cal Poly, George doubled and scored in the third, singled and scored in the fifth, singled again in the seventh, walked in the eighth and raised his average 59 points to .316. He reached safely in all four plate appearances.
George hit .278 (5-18) for Cal Poly in 2015. With 20 plate appearances in 18 games, the frosh left-handed hitter generally got just one at-bat per game, which makes it tough to get into a hitting groove.
"It helps a lot being able to see the ball with more at-bats," he said. "It allows me to get comfortable with how to play baseball. I enjoy it."
He also threw some leather at Victoria, too. He robbed Victoria's Ben Polshuk - his roomate at Cal Poly - of an RBI double with a fine running catch in the alley to end the top of the eighth, preserving a 4-2 lead.
"I don't think he is too happy about that one but I had a good jump at it," George said. "I like center field, but as long as I am in the lineup I don't mind."
Center fielder Jes Staples (Bellarmine) tripled, singled and drove in two runs and Ryan Matranga (San Francisco) also had an RBI for Corvallis. Shortstop Clay Fisher (UC Santa Barbara) singled twice, stole a base and scored once.
The Knights (14-14 all, 10-14 WCL) thus swept the series and stretched their winning streak to six consecutive games overall. They remained three games behind Yakima Valley in the loss column in the race for the WCL's wild-card playoff berth.
Starter Cameron Bishop (UC Irvine) allowed one run and struck out seven in a three-inning stint. Reliever Dakody Clemmer (Central Arizona) allowed one run in three innings to get the win and Harrison McGhee (Concordia) went the final two frames for his first save.
The Knights open a three-game series at South Division rival Medford at 6:35 p.m. Monday. Chris Clements of UC Santa Barbara (0-1, 3.46) is the scheduled starter for the Knights, opposed by Billy Olson (1-0, 1.12) of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Sunday's crowd of 942 increased the season total to 23,854 in 16 dates. The Knights are 4,851 fans ahead of 2014 in a corresponding number of openings.
