Elks rake Knights, Bend hammers Corvallis 12-2 at Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls.
July 15, 2010Second baseman Matt Duffy (pictured) of Long Beach State doubled three times.
Ex-Knights' right-hander James Nygren of Oregon State pitched 7 solid innings to earn the win for the Elks. The senior-to-be from Klamath Falls scattered six hits and allowed one run much to the delight of his hometown fans.
Corvallis hit the ball well all game, but had little to show for it.
Frosh Mitch Haniger of Cal Poly hit a solo home run in the ninth, his first of the season.
The Knights had 8 hits, three of which were doubles by Duffy.
Corvallis played excellent defense, but couldn't match Bend's firepower as the first-place Elks scored 8 runs off starter Dylan Jones of OSU and were led by first baseman Andy Hunter of Gonzaga who launched the game-winning hit in the third with a grand slam homer. Hunter also blasted a three-run homer off reliever Aaron Corwin, a sophomore-to-be at Texas Tech, to collect 7 RBI for the game.
Elks' rightfielder Tommy Richards of Washington State continued his torrid hitting vs. the Knights going 3-for-4, and University of Portland designated hitter Garrett Queen went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
With the loss, Corvallis drops to 16-13 in WCL action.
The Knights look to rebound Friday night at Bend. Game time is 6:35 pm at Vince Genna Stadium.
