Lee's masterpiece powers Knights over Kitsap, 1-0.
July 10, 2015Slater Lee (pictured) stymied Kitsap on four hits and Corvallis edged Kitsap 1-0 for the second nights in a row on Friday to win the West Coast League series.
The rising junior at Cal Poly struck out three, did not issue a walk and set the final seven BlueJackets in order in a sparkling one hour, 45-minute masterpiece. He benefitted from two double plays, got 16 outs via ground balls, and faced just two batters over the nine-inning minimum.
"I was just trying to throw strikes and keep them off balance," said Lee, who threw 66 strikes in 97 pitches. "Pitch-for-pitch everything was OK. My fastball was a little off but I was just trying to throw strikes."
Corvallis (18-15 all, 14-15 WCL) improved to 7-1 in its last eight WCL games and to 10-1 in its last 11 games overall in winning its third straight league series. Kitsap (10-19 WCL) lost its ninth game in a row.
"We are just coming closer as a team and doing fun things, like joking around," Lee said in explaining the dramatic turnaround, which has powered Corvallis back into the race for the WCL's wild-card playoff berth. "That creates the environment for winning."
The Knights won on an unearned run for the second game in a row. With one out in the eighth, Christian Donahue (Oregon State) singled, moved to third on a sacrifice and a stolen base, and scored on an infield error.
Lee then retired the BlueJackets in order on six pitches to end the Knights' fastest game of the season. He lowered his ERA from 3.10 to 2.15 with his third straight quality start.
Corvallis also prevailed 1-0 on Thursday night on a complete-game 3-hitter by Dakody Clemmer (Central Arizona). The staff has not allowed a run in 18 consecutive innings overall, and surrendered just one run in the last 21 innings over the past three games.
Lee said he learned from watching Clemmer's performance on Thursday night.
"The way he attacked their hitters and got ahead early I tried to have the same approach tonight," he said.
Friday's crowd of 1,183 increased the season attendance to 26,234 in 18 dates. The Knights are 3,558 fans ahead of 2014 through a corresponding number of openings.
The series concludes at 6:40 p.m. Saturday. Lefty Cory Nelson (2-0, 2.07) of Pacific Lutheran is expected to start for Corvallis, opposed by righty Adam Kline (2-0, 0.65) of Columbia.
