Pirates edge Corvallis 3-2, Championship Series moves to Moses Lake on Monday.
August 8, 2007Knights' starter Matt Way (pictured) of Washington State struck out 9 over six innings pitched. The junior-to be from Sitka, Alaska struck out the side in the second and third and gave up single runs in the fifth and sixth. The run in the fifth-inning scored on a two-out wild pitch and the run in the sixth-inning on a two-out single.
Corvallis scored first in game one of the WCCBL Championship Series. Shortstop Josh Hogan of Mt. Hood CC led-off the first by reaching via a hit-by-pitch. Hogan proceeded to steal second and then scored on Brett Casey's ground ball RBI single up the middle giving Corvallis the early 1-0 advantage.
Moses Lake tied things in the fifth, and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth.
The Knights responded in the bottom half of the sixth as first baseman Mark Samuelson of UC Riverside led off the frame with a monster homerun to center to tie the score 2-2. The homer was Samuelson's 4th of the summer in only 25 at bats.
Blake Keitzman of Oregon State replaced Way and pitched out of a jam in the 7th, but couldn't wiggle out of a tight spot in the eighth.
Blake hit Michael Capbarat of Cal on a 1-2 pitch to start the inning. Keitzman then induced the next Pirates' hitter to ground into an apparent 4-6-3 double play, but the ball was booted by Knights' second baseman Brett Casey of OSU. Capbarat stole third and scored on a no-out ground out by Zach Hedges of Oklahoma. The unearned run proved to be the game winner.
Corvallis mounted a fierce rally in the 9th off All-WCCBL closer Daniel Wolford of Long Beach State, but it fizzled at the end. Braden Wells of OSU led off the frame with a walk and then stole second. Designated hitter Jordan Post of PLU followed by reaching on a strikeout in the dirt that Moses Lake catcher Kevin Coddington tried to back pick Wells at second allowing Post to reach safely. With runners at first and second and no out, Coach Dorey had Rocky Gale of UP hit & run. Gale hit the ball hard on the ground to short advancing the moving runners. Moses Lake then chose to intentionally walk Corvallis third baseman Clayton Shaw of UP to load the bases with one out.
Things were looking good for the home team as hot-hitting Josh Hogan came to the plate. Wolford settled down and quickly got ahead of Hogan with two nasty sliders and finished off Josh with a called strike three on a fastball.
The Knights last hope was Casey, but after taking a slider for a strike and fouling off two fastballs Brett took a slider for a called strike three that ended the threat and game.
"Too many strikeouts looking," said Knights' outfielder Matt Wyckoff. "If we're going to win we can't do that."
"It was a rough game," said Mark Samuelson. "We made a couple mistakes and they played well. We just have to get out there and play hard on Monday."
Jorge Reyes of Oregon State pitched the eighth for Moses Lake. He pitched out of trouble striking out Jake Roy of Dakota Wesleyan with two outs and runners at first and second.
Marcus Tackett, who is transferring from Oral Roberts to University of Texas, pitched 7 solid innings to earn the win. Keitzman took his first loss of the summer.
