Clemmer shines in relief outing in 5-2 loss to Bellingham.
June 10, 2015Reliever Dakody Clemmer (pictured) twirled five innings of scoreless relief on Wednesday night but Corvallis fell 5-2 to Bellingham at Goss Stadium.
A freshman righty from Central Arizona JC, Clemmer struck out four, did not issue a walk, and maintained a 0.00 ERA in seven innings over three appearances.
"I was spotting up really well," said the Vancouver, Wash., native, who threw 47 strikes in 66 pitches. "I had good defense behind me. What more can you ask for when guys make plays like that?"
Third baseman Trevin Stephens' two-run single was all the offense Corvallis mustered. A freshman at Linn-Benton CC who grew up in Canby, his two-out, bases-loaded single drove in both Corvallis runs in the fourth inning. He thus assumed the team lead with three RBIs in five games.
Shortstop Bret Sundberg (Sierra JC) singled twice, doubled and scored; second baseman Taylor Travess (Mt. Hood CC) singled twice and walked and left fielder AJ Valencia (George Fox) singled twice for the Knights.
Corvallis brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth after loading the bases with one out, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the game. Corvallis left 11 on base.
Bellingham parlayed two Corvallis errors into four unearned runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead. Clemmer and Craig Colen (2) then blanked the Bells on three hits over the next seven innings to keep the Knights within striking distance.
Corvallis strung together four two-out singles in the fourth � the last Stephens' RBI hit � to draw within 5-2 but they could get no closer. They left the bases loaded in the sixth and double plays killed potential comebacks in the final two innings.
Corvallis (2-4 all, 1-4 WCL) has lost four games in a row since an opening-night victory at Bend. Bellingham (4-1 WCL) remained in first place in the West Division and clinched the series with its second consecutive win.
The series concludes at 6:40 p.m. Thursday; Washington State righty Ryan Walker (1-0, 0.00) will pitch for Corvallis. Bellingham's projected starter was Edmonds (Wash.) CC freshman righty Alec Kisena; however, he was drafted by Detroit in the 16th round on Wednesday and won't pitch on Thursday.

Wednesday's crowd of 1,068 upped the season attendance to 4,857 in three dates. That puts the Knights 584 fans ahead of last year's total through a corresponding number of home openings.
