Clemmer stymies Kitsap 1-0 with 3-hit shutout.
July 9, 2015Pitcher Dakody Clemmer (pictured) handcuffed Kitsap on three hits and Corvallis opened a seven-game homestand with a 1-0 victory over Kitsap on Thursday.
The sophomore-to-be at Central Arizona from Vancouver, Wash., struck out eight, walked just one, and set the final 10 BlueJackets in order in an efficient one hour, 48-minute masterpiece. He retired the side in order in seven of the nine innings and allowed just two runners past first base.
"I don't know what slow is. I like to keep a pace," he said, when asked if he liked to work fast to get into a comfortable rhythm. "My fastball had a really good life and I was spotting it really well.
"Our team made really good plays, the outfield made some big plays and some ground balls had the infield working," to the tune of 13 ground-ball outs. "I also had some K's in there so that always helps."
Clemmer threw 74 strikes in 103 pitches in his longest outing of the summer; his previous best was a seven-inning stint in a 4-1 loss at Medford on June 26. He lowered his ERA more than a full run, from 4.82 to 3.64.
Clemmer stranded two runners in the third after a two-out triple and his lone walk. Kitsap also hit back-to-back singles with two outs in the seventh but he retired the side on a ground out to shortstop.
Corvallis (17-15 all, 13-15 WCL) improved to 6-1 in its last seven WCL games and to 9-1 in its last 10 games overall. Kitsap (10-18 WCL) lost its eighth game in a row.
The Knights scored the game's lone run in the third inning. Andy Cosgrove (Washington) was hit by a pitch, advanced to third a single by Emilio Alcantar (Linn-Benton CC) and an outfield error, and came home on Nick Madrigal's (Oregon State) groundout to second base.
Thursday's crowd of 1,197 increased the season total to 25,051 in 17 dates. The Knights are 3,093 fans ahead of 2014 through a corresponding number of openings.
The series resumes at 6:40 p.m. Friday. Righty Slater Lee of Cal Poly (0-0, 3.09) is expected to start for Corvallis, opposed by lefty John Oltman (1-0, 1.66) of Creighton.
