Jace Fry dazzles Kitsap in his longest start of the summer.
July 9, 2011Corvallis lefty Jace Fry (pictured) gave Oregon State fans a possible preview of the next three or four years in a 3-0 victory over Kitsap.
A Southridge High graduate who will play for the Beavers if he doesnt sign with the Oakland A's, Fry allowed three hits and struck out six in six innings, his longest stint of the summer.
Chris Mendoza blanked the BlueJackets in the seventh and eighth innings and Nick Hoover pitched the ninth. A single and an error brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth, but Hoover retired Claude Johnson on a roller to shortstop to notch his first save.
The Knights (20-12, 18-12 WCL) regained sole possession of first place in the West Division of the West Coast League when Bend lost 4-3 at Cowlitz to fall out of a first-place tie. It was the Knights' fourth straight win overall and their fourth in row over the BlueJackets.
Three of those victories were shutouts and Kitsap has scored just two runs in 36 innings against the Knights. The BlueJackets (14-17) lost their ninth consecutive game.
Corvallis did its offensive damage early. With two outs in the first, Jimmy Allen singled and then scored on David Armendariz's triple to center field. Armendariz made it 2-0 on Sean Myrom's RBI infield single to deep short.
In the second, Matt Nylen walked, stole second, and scored when Corey Moore's line drive glanced off first baseman Andrew Biancardi's glove into right field for an RBI single.
The Knights wouldnt score again, but Fry, Mendoza and Hoover ably protected the lead. Knights' relievers are 1-0 with three saves and only one unearned run in 12 combined innings during the four-game winning streak.
Outfielder Cade Gotta, a new acquisition from Riverside (Calif.) CC who joined the team on Monday, was 1-for-3 with a walk in his debut.
The series resumes at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on Holiday Inn Express Baseball Giveaway/Bi-Mart 2-for-1 Night. The projected starters are right-handers Max Beatty (3-1, 3.03) for the Knights and Cole Thompson (1-1, 2.57) for Kitsap.
The Knights play Kitsap again on Wednesday night, and host Kelowna on Friday through Sunday. The San Diego Chicken, the most famous mascot in sports, will perform on Saturday night.
