Knights explode for 11-4 win on Fireworks Night.
July 2, 2016Corvallis thrilled a sellout Oregon State Credit Union Fireworks Night crowd of 3,083 on Saturday night with an 11-4 nonleague victory over the Willamette Valley Brewers.
Catcher Zak Taylor (Oregon State) capped a six-run, fifth-inning rally with a ringing two-run double off the left-field fence to help the Knights (19-8 all) improve to 6-0 in nonleague games. They finished 7-1 on the homestand, which concluded Saturday.
The six-run outburst erased a 1-0 deficit and broke the game open. The key blows were a two-out, two-run infield single by Andrew Reichenbach (George Fox) and Taylors ensuing double.
Taylor Travess (Mt. Hood) drove in three runs and pitched the final two innings to close out the Brewers, who play in the Oregon Collegiate Baseball League. They are coached by alum Jake Rodriguez (2009).
Emilio Alcantar (Lewis-Clark State) singled, stole a base and scored twice. Andy Atwood (OSU) singled, walked twice, scored and drove in two and Michael Farris (UC Riverside) had an RBI double.
The Knights open a key South Division series at Yakima Valley at 7:05 p.m. Sunday. Corvallis leads the Pippins by one-half game in the divisions first-half pennant race.
Righty Jacob Wong (1-0, 1.02) of Grand Canyon is the projected starting pitcher for the Knights, opposed by righty Ryan Garcia (2-2, 1.96) of UCLA for the Pippins.
The series continues at 3:05 p.m. Monday and at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. The Knights then conclude the first half of their WCL schedule by hosting Wenatchee on Wednesday through Thursday.
