Black Bears salvage series finale; beat Knights 2-1.
July 23, 2011Corvallis second baseman Corey Moore (pictured) of PLU was selected to play in the WCL All-Star Game, as the senior-to-be will replace Kitsap's Evan Potter.
Cowlitz recorded its first ever win over Corvallis this evening at David Story Field as Black Bears ace Jeff Gold of University of Oregon threw a complete game to earn his fifth win of the summer.
The Knights almost took a 2-1 lead in the sixth-inning when David Armendariz appeared to hit a two-run shot to left field, but the Bears' Billy Flamion, a 25th round draft pick of Houston, robbed Armendariz leaping high over the fence to catch David's blast.
Flamion caught the ball at its peak, while jumping high over the fence.
The umpiring crew ruled it a catch, but gave Trent Oleszczuk, who was at second, two bases because Flamion left the field of play giving the Knights its only run of the game.
Starter Jace Fry pitched five strong innings allowing only one run and was replaced by freshman Scott Schultz of Oregon State who was greeted with a double and triple on his first two pitches to give Cowlitz a lead Gold would not relinquish.
With the win, Cowlitz improves to 21-21 and Corvallis drops to 26-15. Both the Black Bears and Bend Elks, who beat Wenatchee, gained a game on the first place Knights.
Corvallis gets the next two days off as part of the WCL's All-Star break, and will resume league play on Wednesday at home vs. the expansion Klamath Falls Gems.
The All-Star Game, powered by PEAK Internet, is Tuesday, July 26 at Goss Stadium. Gates open at 5 pm. The Home Run Derby starts at 5:30 pm and first pitch is 7:15 pm.
There will be a fireworks show immediately following the game. Get your tickets on Monday. They are going fast.
