Corvallis blanks Bellingham 1-0 to take game one of series.
June 19, 2007The Knights stayed unbeaten in WCCBL play as southpaw Matt Way of WSU and closer Mike Koons of SDSU combined to shutout Bellingham 1-0. Way has now racked up 15 scoreless innings as Matt tossed 8 shutout innings vs. the Bells to earn the win. Way allowed only one hit while striking out 8. Koons pitched out of a bases loaded jam to earn his second save of the young season.
Frosh third baseman Clayton Shaw of University of Portland delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh as Shaw's single up-the-middle scored Nick Akins from third. Akins reached third by stealing second and advancing to third on the play when the catcher's throw sailed into centerfield.
"If you have good pitching you always have a chance to win," said Head Coach Matt Dorey. And the Knights have been pitching very well as Corvallis has only given up one run over the last 36 innings.
The Knights improved their overall record to 8-2 and league mark to 4-0.
