Corvallis takes opening WCCBL series with 2-0 win over Elks.

Jerad Thompson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning as Knights pitching shutout Bend for a second consecutive night. The freshman right-hander from Mt. Hood CC combined with Mike Koons of San Diego State to blank the Elks on three hits. Bend's Ryan Scott broke-up Thompson's no-hit bid with one-out bloop double in the eighth inning. Koons relieved Thompson with two-outs in the eighth and got Brian Pearl to ground out to second on his first pitch. The Elks mounted a ninth-inning rally, but Koons pitched out of trouble by striking out Nick Cejka with the bases loaded to end the game. The Knights will go for the series sweep on Saturday night.

The Knights scored their first run in the first inning on an infield out as Matt Wyckoff of George Fox plated Cody Bartlett of Washington State from third on a ground out to second. Bartlett had walked to lead off the game, advanced to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Josh Hogan's sacrifice bunt. In his second at bat, Bartlett suffered what might be a season-ending thumb injury sliding into first base head first on a close play that ended the inning.

Corvallis picked up its second run on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Nick Akins of Riverside CC that scored Rocky Gale of University of Portland. The run was made possible by first baseman Jordan Post's hit-and-run single that moved Gale from first to third with one out. The left-hand hitting first baseman from Pacific Lutheran University went 3 for 3 with a double and reached base four times.

Thompson earned the win, his second of the young season. Jerad allowed only one hit while walking only one and striking out 8. Koons registered the Knights first save of the summer.

With the win, Corvallis improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the WCCBL.

Knights pitching has tossed shutouts in 3 of its last 4 games.

Brad Reid of Bellevue CC is Saturday night's probable starter. Reid is making his Knights debut.

Richey's Market American Legion team beat Eugene's BI-MART Challengers 6-1 in a game right before the Knights evening contest. Both teams swung wood bats.

302 fans combined to watch both games Friday night.
