Knights sign UCR pitcher Quijada

The Knights have signed pitcher Hazahel Quijada of UC Riverside for the 2016 season. He is a 6-foot, 195-pound lefty from San Gorgonio High School in Highland, Calif.

Quijada was named the San Andreas League MVP and the San Bernardino County MVP as a senior at San Gorgonio. He also was all-CIF Division 4 all-star honors, was named medium school all-state by Cal-Hi Sports, and was an honorable-mention Perfect Game all-American.

He replaces Pacific Lutheran right-handed pitcher Derrick Mahlum on the roster. Mahlum is injured and will not play summer baseball in 2016.

Donnie Marbut, the former head baseball coach at Washington State University, was named the President of the West Coast League, the premier summer collegiate baseball league west of the Mississippi River, last week.

Marbut, a native of Aberdeen, Wash., and a former player at Portland State, is the league's fifth president.

Toledo (AAA International, Tigers) pitcher Matt Boyd (2010) allowed two runs on six hits, and had seven strikeouts in a 10-2 opening-day win over Louisville on Thursday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

Marbut named new WCL President

Donnie Marbut, the former head baseball coach at Washington State University, was named the President of the West Coast League, the premier summer collegiate baseball league west of the Mississippi River, last week.

Marbut, a native of Aberdeen, Wash., and a former player at Portland State, is the league's fifth president.

"The league is thrilled to introduce Donnie as its new leader," said owner/general manager Mark Nonis of the Kelowna Falcons, a founding member of the WCL. "We are confident he will guide our established league to new heights."

Five Knights on MLB opening-day rosters

Happy Friday, everyone.

The major-league baseball season opens on Sunday night and all indications are that five former Aloha or Corvallis Knights will be on opening-day rosters.

This year's big-league Knights are led by veteran catcher Chris Stewart (2001) of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Riverside City College. He's beginning his third season in the Steel City, where he's become a solid fixture after bouncing around the majors for several years, mostly with the Giants and Yankees.

Starting pitcher Bud Norris (2005) has found a new home with the Atlanta Braves, after spending time with the Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles and San Diego Padres. Reliever Marc Rzepczynski (2006) is now with the Oakland A's, after stints with Toronto, St. Louis, Cleveland and San Diego.

Third baseman Matt Duffy (2010) is in his second season with the San Francisco Giants, after a breakout rookie season. He's teammates with reliever Josh Osich (2008), who was very impressive after making the big club last summer.

Over in the American League, pitcher Matt Andriese (2009) of the Tampa Bay Rays and pitcher Matt Boyd (2010) of the Detroit Tigers were among their team's final cuts. They will begin the season in the triple-A International League, Andriese at Durham, Boyd at Toledo.

Catchers Rocky Gale (2007, 2009) of San Diego and Andrew Susac (2009) of San Francisco were also late cuts and will start the season in the triple-A Pacific Coast League. Gale will play at El Paso, Susac at Sacramento.

And third basemen Brent Morel (2006-7) and Matt Hague (2005), each of whom have several years of MLB experience, signed with Japanese teams in the offseason and will play overseas this year.

ESPN.com reporter David Schoenfield listed Osich among his "10 sleeper relief pitchers to watch for in 2016" story. Here is his analysis of the left-hander, who made the majors in 2015 after a lengthy stay in the Giants' minor-league organization:

"He has struggled with his command all spring (six walks, eight strikeouts), but the 27-year-old is a hard-throwing lefty who seems like a logical replacement for the retired Jeremy Affeldt. Osich was solid in 28.2 innings with the Giants last season, when he averaged 95.6 mph with his heater. He also throws a slider and changeup, and if he can throw strikes, he'll be a nice weapon."

Alum Rocky Gale (2007, 2009) of the University of Portland was one of San Diego's final cuts as the Padres broke spring training. He was sent to triple-A El Paso of the Pacific Coast League, where he has starred the past two years. Rocky made it up to the majors last season, so here is hoping he can get promoted again sometime this year.

Diamondbacks release Scott Schultz

Alum Scott Schultz (2011) of Oregon State has been released by the Arizona Diamondbacks after two years in their minor league system. He was a key member of our talented 2011 pitching staff, which led us to the West Coast League championship.

Scott made it as high as low-A Kane County of the Midwest League last season. Overall he was 9-7 with a 4.54 ERA in 30 games, with 96 strikeouts in 121 career innings.

Osich looking good with Giants

Alum Josh Osich (2008) of Oregon State looks to be on target to make the San Francisco Giants this spring. Former PA announcer Brian Brooks found this little nugget on CBS Sports and we are pleased to pass it along:

"Osich made his major league debut in 2015, compiling a 2.20 ERA with 27 strikeouts over 28.2 innings. He will fill the left-handed reliever role vacated by Jeremy Affeldt (retirement).

"While it is unclear whether manager Bruce Bochy will use Osich in high-pressure situations in the same vein as Affeldt, he will definitely be a part of this bullpen in 2016. The 27-year-old southpaw regularly sits in the mid-90s with his fastball and works off of it with his slider and changeup."

Congrats to Josh, who battled arm injuries and a lengthy stay in the minors before finally getting his chance last summer.

The Yakima Valley Pippins have added Hunter Hansen, an East Valley High School alumni with previous experience in the West Coast League, and right-handed pitcher Ryan Garcia, a 6-foot, 170-pound senior from La Salle High School in Sierra Madre, Calif., who will play at UCLA next season, to their 2016 roster.

Bishop, Sodders nominated for Big West POTW honors

Alums Cameron Bishop (2015) of UC Irvine and Austin Sodders (2014) of UC Riverside were nominated for Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for March 7-13, but did not win.

Bishop pitched 6.2 shutout innings and got the win in a 2-0 victory over Tennessee on Saturday. He allowed just four hits and had six strikeouts. Bishop is returning to the Knights this season.

Sodders allowed one run and four hits and had seven strikeouts over six innings and got the win in an 8-4 victory over CSU-Bakersfield on Saturday. He played for us after his freshman year at Riverside City College.

Also, alum Caleb Whalen (2012) was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for Feb. 29-March 6. He hit .462 with three doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five RBIs as the Pilots won three of four against the UC Riverside Highlanders at Joe Etzel Field. Whalen was also a perfect 2-for-2 in steals and played a flawless center field.

Ice earns Pac-12 POTW honors

Alum Logan Ice (2014) of Oregon State was named the Pacific-12 Conference Player of the Week and was named to the initial watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate catcher, this past week.

Ice was 6-for-8 (.750) with six hits, two home runs, a triple, a double, eight RBIs and drew three walks in three games against the University of San Diego and William & Mary.

Ice was one of 74 players on the Bench Award Watch List. It will be pared down to semifinalists on May 18. Finalists will be announced June 6, with the winner taking home the hardware from Wichita on June 30. For more on that story, please click here.

Knights lose Balfour to elbow surgery

We told you our roster would change a bit as the season got closer, and unfortunately our prediction has come true.

Right-hander Joseph Balfour, a junior at San Jose State, will miss the rest of the college season, and summer baseball, after having Tommy John elbow reconstructive surgery. He earned second-team all-WCL honors last summer as the ace of the Cowlitz Black Bears.

Joseph is a native of Sherwood, Ore., and pitched last spring for Mt. Hood CC after pitching his frosh season at St. Martin's University.

Tough break for Joseph, but if he redshirts this year, he'd be available to play for us again in 2017 after his redshirt junior season. Get better soon!
