Knights sign Merrick Patito of Chaffey College

We are down to just 12 days until we begin the 2014 season on Wednesday, June 4, by hosting the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day at Goss Stadium, presented by PEAK Internet.
The Sea Dogs are a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area. Former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher.

The Knights have signed right-handed pitcher Merrick Patito of Chaffey College for the 2014 season. He was 6-3, 3.80 in 11 starts and 12 appearances as a freshman at Chaffey in 2014, with 71 strikeouts in 72 innings.
If his name sounds familiar, it should. Merrick is the younger brother of former Knights pitcher Mitch Patito (2010-12), who completed his eligibility at UC Riverside this season. Merrick graduated from Jurupa Valley High School.
He helps fill the void left by the loss of Oregon pitchers Stephen Nogosek (2013) and Jordan Spencer, of UC Irvine's Michael Martin and of Western Oregon's Zach Kayser, all of whom are being shut down for the summer and thus won't play for us as expected.

Linfield junior Chris Haddeland (2014) was named the American Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year and the D3baseball.com West Region Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive year. Haddeland is 11-1 with a save and a 0.97 ERA, with four shutouts, seven complete games, and 76 strikeouts and has held opposing batters to a .171 average.
Unfortunately, Haddeland and the Wildcats lost 10-0 to St. Thomas (Minn.) on Friday morning in the opening game of the DIII World Series in Appleton, Wis. They are still alive, however, and will play Emory University at 9 a.m. PDT on Saturday morning in a loser-out game.

Only two 2014 Knights were in action on Thursday in a slow day for West Coast baseball.
* UC Santa Barbara outfielder Scott Quinlan was 1-for-4 with two runs in a 7-1 win over UC Davis.
* Tacoma CC pitcher Stephen White went .2 scoreless innings in a 4-2 loss to Treasure Valley in the NWAACC championships at Longview, Wash.

New Hampshire (AA Eastern, Blue Jays) pitcher Matt Boyd (2010) allowed one hit and one run, had four strikeouts and got a non-decision in a 3-1 win over Reading on Thursday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

* Lehigh Valley (AAA International) first baseman Jim Murphy (2007) was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in a 9-4 loss to Toledo.

Big honors for an alum of our 2013 West Coast League championship team.
Cal Poly sophomore right-handed pitcher Casey Bloomquist was named one of 18 semifinalists for the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Pitcher of the Year award on Tuesday. The award will be presented on June 28 at the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions in Lubbock.

Big honors for two alums from the pitching staff of our 2011 West Coast League championship team.
Oregon State left-handers Ben Wetzler and Jace Fry were named as semifinalists for the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Pitcher of the Year award, as they made the 18-player Watch. The award will be presented on June 28 at the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions in Lubbock.
Fry leads the Pac-12 with 11 wins, with a 1.50 ERA in a team-leading 107.2 innings. He has 87 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .193 against him.
Wetzler is 10-1 and has the nation's lowest ERA (0.84) and batting average against (.146). He has 68 strikeouts in 86 innings and has allowed just 42 hits and eight earned runs.
Wetzler was also named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's National Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday for his two-hit, 3-0 shutout of No. 5 Washington this past Sunday. He was named the Pacific-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

Alum Jimmy Allen (2011), a senior third baseman at Cal Poly, was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for May 12-18. He blasted three homers, drove in five runs and hit .429 (6-for-14) with seven runs scored as the Mustangs swept Cal State-Northridge to clinch their first conference title. No. 1 Oregon State visits Oregon tonight for a nonconference encounter. OSU is 4-0 vs. Oregon this year and has won six straight over the past two seasons.
Then, it's off to USC for the final Pac-12 series. The 16 NCAA regional sites will be announced on Sunday night, and the pairings and national seeds will be released at 9 a.m. Monday.

Alum David Armendariz (2011), the MVP of our 2011 WCL championship team and a senior first baseman at Cal Poly Pomona, was named the Daktronics and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Year after an outstanding season.
Armendariz hit .332 (64-193) in 48 games, with 10 homers, 19 doubles, two triples, 56 RBIs and 10 stolen bases for CPP, which ended its season last week by going 0-2 at the NCAA Division III UC San Diego Regional. The native of Granada Hills, Calif., was second in homers (5) and RBIs (36) in league games only.

Dixie State designated hitter Kevin Kline (2013-14) was a second-team all-West Region choice by Daktronics and the NCBWA. Kevin hit .319 (65-204) in 53 games, with 20 doubles, seven homers and 54 RBIs.

* Third baseman Carter Bell (2009) is playing for the Washington (Pa.) Wild Things after being released by Arizona.
* First baseman Taylor Ard (2009), released by the Mariners in the offseason, is playing for the River City Rascals.
* Pitcher D.J. Johnson (2008-09), also released by Arizona, is with the Traverse City (Mich.) Beach Bums.
Also, alum Kevin Burke (2012) is the play-by-play radio voice of the Beach Bums. Former Washington State infielder Tommy Richards, whose father, Jim, owns the Bend Elks, is playing for the Gateway (Ill.) Grizzlies.

Knights name Skyler Riley new assistant coach

Great weekend for the Beavers at Goss Stadium as they moved to within one game of clinching a repeat Pac-12 title by winning their series over Washington. All three games were sellouts and the series attracted nearly 10,000 fans.
Alum Jace Fry 92011) shut out the Huskies 1-0 on Saturday; future Knight Logan Ice (2014) had the walk-off RBI in the bottom of the ninth. Alum Ben Wetzler (2011) blanked the Dawgs 3-0 on two hits on Sunday in a masterful performance.

The Knights have hired Skyler Riley as their new assistant coach for the 2014 season. He succeeds Billy Clontz, who is now the head coach at Kelowna. Skyler is the grandson of former Oregon State coach Jack Riley, and the son of the late Mickey Riley, a former OSU standout.

We have rescheduled the live remote broadcast of the popular Joe Beaver Show on KEJO-AM from Tuesday until Wednesday, May 28, to avoid a possible conflict with a press conference announcing the hiring of Wayne Tinkle as Oregon State's new men's basketball coach.

Alums Ben Wetzler (2011) of Oregon State and Casey Bloomquist of Cal Poly were named semifinalists for the Dick Howser Award last week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). The award is given to the top player in collegiate baseball.
Wetzler is 10-1, 0.84 for Oregon State and Bloomquist is 12-1, 1.60 for Cal Poly this season.

Future Knight Chris Haddeland (2014) of Linfield pitched two scoreless innings on Saturday to save a 4-2 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the championship game of the Linfield NCAA Division III regional at McMinnville. The Wildcats now advance to the Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis., where they begin the defense of their national title on Friday.
Haddeland pitched 11 shutout innings in the regional, as he won Wednesday's opening game 1-0 with a complete-game shutout of LeTourneau. Teammate Jackson Ruckert (2014), a 10-day signee, will also play for the national title.
However, designated hitter Kevin Kline (2013-14) of Dixie State wasn't as fortunate. DSU went 1-2 at the NCAA Division II West Regional and was eliminated from championship contention.

The Houston Astros have moved catcher/alum Jake Rodriguez (2010) to Quad Cities in the low-A Midwest League from Lancaster of the high-A California League to get the former Oregon State standout more playing time. Jake was hitting .116 (5-43) with five RBIs in 15 games at Lancaster.
The San Francisco Giants have placed pitcher Chase Johnson (2011) of the Augusta GreenJackets and Cal Poly on the 7-day disabled list. Chase is 1-4, 4.63 in seven games with the South Atlantic League team, with 33 strikeouts in 45 innings. He was San Francisco's third-round pick in the 2013 draft.
Alum Chris Johnson (2011) of Portland has been assigned to the GreenJackets to fill that spot. He made his debut on Sunday and gave up two runs in two innings.
Alum Scott Lyman of the Jupiter Hammerheads (Miami) was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for May 12-18. He defeated Clearwater with a complete-game 5-hitter on May 14, striking out six and allowing one run.

Linfield junior ace Chris Haddeland (2014) blanked LeTourneau 1-0 on Wednesday in the opening game of the Linfield Regional in the NCAA Division III national tournament. He allowed four hits and had three strikeouts.
He is now 11-1 with an 0.99 ERA. The Wildcats are the defending national champs; they play Trinity, Texas, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in their next regional game.

Dixie State junior Kevin Kline (2013-14) earned first-team PacWest all-conference honors this week. Kevin hit .325, with six homers and a team-high 20 doubles and 54 RBIs. Dixie State opens up postseason play on Thursday afternoon against Chico State in the NCAA Division II West Regional at UC San Diego.

Alums Matt Duffy (2010) of Long Beach State and Greg Peavey (2007) of Oregon State earned double-A Eastern League honors for the week of May 5-11.
A shortstop for the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants), Duffy hit .556 (15-27) with a homer and 10 RBIs. A pitcher for Binghamton (Mets), Peavey pitched a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts against New Hampshire on May 7.
And we missed it earlier this year, but OSU alum Matt Boyd (2010) of Dunedin (Blue Jays) was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for April 3-13 and for April 21-27. He has since been promoted from the advanced-A FSL to New Hampshire of the Eastern League.

Big 8-4 win for the Beavers over Portland at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer last night before a sellout crowd of more than 4,200. Lots of former/future Knights were involved on both sides.
Catcher Logan Ice (2014) was 1-for-4, first baseman Gabe Clark (2013) was 2-for-3 with a run and pitcher Scott Schultz gave up two unearned runs and had a strikeout in one inning for the Beavers.
Pinch-hitter Kevin Farley (2014) was 1-for-1, shortstop Mike Lucarelli (2013-14) was 0-for-3 and second baseman Caleb Whalen (2012) and third baseman Cody Lenahan (2013) were each 0-for-4 for the Pilots.

Knights' alums called and caught a no-hitter in the California League on Tuesday night when Lancaster defeated Bakersfield 1-0. Play-by-play announcer Jason Schwartz (2010) was on the mic and former Oregon State catcher Jake Rodriguez (2010) was behind the plate for Lancaster, Houston's affiliate in the high-A circuit. The Miami Marlins have returned pitcher James Nygren (2009) to Jacksonville of the double-A Southern League after a short stint with New Orleans in the triple-A Pacific Coast League (yes, a team that borders the Gulf of Mexico is in the PCL. CHRIS SHAW (Midland CC): Chris hit .372 (58-156) in 46 games, with 10 homers and 48 RBIs. His season is over.
CHRIS BISHOP (PLU): A two-time returnee, Chris was 5-5, 2.68 in 77.1 innings over 12 games, with 71 strikeouts. His season is over.
SEAN EBERHARDT (George Fox): Another returning vet, Sean was 2-2, 4.50 in 22 innings over 16 games, with four saves and 13 strikeouts. His season is over.
CHRIS HADDELAND (Linfield): Chris is 10-1, 1.08 in 13 games, with 74 strikeouts in 100 innings. Linfield opens play in the Division III playoffs on Wednesday.
MICHAEL KELLY (Clackamas CC): A 10-day signee, Michael is 1-6, 5.69 in eight games, with 14 strikeouts in 42.2 innings.
DERRICK MAHLUM (PLU): Derrick was 7-3, 2.28 in 11 games, with 77 strikeouts in 71 innings. His season is over.
AUSTIN SODDERS (Riverside CC): Austin was 3-1, 2.81 in 11 games, with 13 strikeouts in 16 innings. His season is over.
STEPHEN WHITE (Tacoma CC): Stephen is 2-1, 2.51 in eight games, with 22 strikeouts in 28.2 innings. Tacoma starts the NWAACC playoffs shortly.

* Mobile (AA Southern, Diamondbacks) pitcher Jimmie Sherfy (2011) struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief and got a hold in a 3-1 win over Jacksonville on Tuesday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.
Otherwise, it was a pretty slow day down on the farm and there were no honorable mentions.

We trust everyone had a nice Mother's Day and a great weekend. The Beavers looked overpowering in sweeping UCLA, with the help of some former/future Knights to boot.
Alum Ben Wetzler (2011) won Friday's game, with alum Scott Schultz getting the save. Alum Jace Fry (2011) won on Sunday; alum Brandon Jackson (2012) didn't allow a run in two appearances and future Knight Logan Ice (2014) had four hits and an RBI on Sunday and the game-winning RBI on Friday night.
And now we are down to just 23 more days until our season opener, a June 4 nonconference game against the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet.
The Sea Dogs are a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area and former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher.

Alum Brent Morel (2006-07) of Cal Poly was recalled by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, and the optioned back to triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday. He was 0-for-1 in his lone at-bat.

Alum Nick Akins (2007) has been released by the Joliet Slammers of the independent Frontier League. He was placed on the suspended list last week; he hit .302 for the Slammers in 2013, with 21 homers and 62 RBIs in 68 games.

Three alums were nominated for Big West Conference Player or Pitcher of the Week honors for May 5-11, but none were selected.
Cal Poly junior Nick Torres (2012) and UC Santa Barbara junior Greg Mahle (2012) were nominated for Player of the Week honors. UC Riverside senior Dylan Stuart (2011-12) was nominated for Pitcher of the Week honors, but wasn't selected either.
