Wetzler, Fry, Bloomquist on POTY watch list

Happy Friday, everyone.

Big baseball series in Corvallis this weekend, as Oregon visits Oregon State in the Civil War. Games are set for 7 p.m. today, 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

There will be plenty of former and future Knights on the field. Alums Ben Wetzler (2011) and Jace Fry (2011) get the start on Friday and Sunday for OSU. The bullpen will be staffed by Scott Schultz (2011), Brandon Jackson (2012) and Kevin Flemer (2013). Catchers Logan Ice (2014) and Nate Esposito (2012) and infielders Dan James (2014) and Gabe Clark (2013) are also at the ready for the offense.

The Ducks feature pitchers Steven Nogosek (2013-14) and Jordan Spencer (2014). Outfielder Connor Hofmann (2011-12) left the team earlier this year following a dispute about playing time (or a lack thereof).

Speaking of Wetzler and Fry, they were named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame's watch list for the national Pitcher of the Year award. Wetzler is 6-1 with a 0.68 ERA; Fry is 7-1, 1.95 heading into this weekend's series with Oregon.

Cal Poly sophomore Casey Bloomquist (2013) was also named to the list. He's 9-0, 1.36 this spring. Please click here for full details.

* George Fox pitcher Sean Eberhardt retired the only hitter he faced to save a 7-2 win over Corban. Shortstop Marc Gallegos was 1-for-5 for Corban.

* Cypress CC designated hitter Joe Duffin was 1-for-2 with an RBI in a 9-7 loss to Santa Ana.

* Riverside CC designated hitter Austin Sodders was 1-for-5 in a 1-0 loss to Saddleback. He will pitch for us this summer.

Binghamton (AA Eastern, Mets) pitcher Greg Peavey (2007) allowed three earned runs in seven innings, had five strikeouts and got a no-decision in a 5-4 win over Portland on Thursday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

The Knights have signed University of Portland second baseman Kevin Farley to a 10-day contract.

Farley is a 6-foot, 200-pound sophomore from California High School in San Ramon, Calif. He is hitting .194 (14-72) in 26 games, with two homers and 14 RBIs, heading into this weekend's West Coast Conference series with San Francisco. Farley hit .188 (3-16) in 11 games as a freshman in 2013, with no homers and one RBI.

A two-year letterwinner at California High School, Kevin led team in home runs as a senior, helping the Grizzlies reach the CIF section championships at Oakland Coliseum. He also earned two letters in football and was the quarterback for the East Bay All-State Team, helping the squad to a victory in the Holiday Classic All-Star Game.

His grandfather Leon played soccer and rugby at UCLA and is a member of the UCLA Hall of Fame. His grandfather Norman played baseball at Arkansas State and briefly played minor league ball in the Washington Senators organization. His uncle Pat played football at UC Santa Barbara.

The Knights have signed pitcher Austin Sodders of Riverside City College for the 2014 season. He is a 6-foot-4, 180-pound freshman lefthander from Canyon Creek High School in Moreno Valley, Calif. He is 3-1 with a 3.50 ERA in 11 appearances this spring, with 16 strikeouts in 16 innings.

Sodders replaces pitcher Chris Vargas on the roster. A freshman at UC Riverside, Vargas will miss the summer season because of injury.

Linfield junior pitcher Chris Haddeland (2014) was nominated for Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, but was not selected. He allowed three earned runs and had nine strikeouts in eight innings of a 4-1 loss against George Fox this past Friday. It was his first loss of the season.

Linfield won the final two games of the series, however, to clinch the NWC title and to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs. Linfield is the defending national champion.

Former Knights' pitcher/outfielder Michael Blake (2010) was traded to the Sioux Falls (SD) Canaries by the Laredo Lemurs of the independent American Association on Monday. Blake was an all-WCL choice for us in 2010 after his sophomore season at Mt. Hood. He later played at Hawaii and spent three seasons in the Arizona organization before being released in the offseason.

The Pittsburgh Pirates re-activated catcher Chris Stewart (2001) from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday and recalled him from triple-A Indianapolis, where he hit .400 (6-15) in a four-game rehab stint.

Stewie started Sunday's game against Milwaukee, went 1-for-6, and was in the middle of this brawl between the teams. Quite the welcome back to the bigs!

Timberline (Wash.) High School baseball coach Matt Acker will join the ownership group of the Kitsap BlueJackets, The Olympian newspaper of Olympia, Wash. reported Thursday. He will be in charge of their operational decisions.

"The BlueJackets are one of 12 teams in the West Coast League, which features some of the country's top college baseball players. Acker was the BlueJackets' head coach from 2005 to 2011.

"I care about the owners of the BlueJackets and what they're trying to do and what they've created," said Acker, who also is president of the Puget Sound Collegiate League, a local summer wood-bat league. "They've supported me and started the league (PSCL), and I feel an obligation to help them.

"It makes me feel proud as somebody who runs a business and works with all these guys. They stay around. They don't have turnover."

Future 2014 Knights pitcher Chris Haddeland of Linfield and Derrick Mahlum of Pacific Lutheran were nominated for Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for April 6-13, but were not selected.

Haddeland allowed one hit, had seven strikeouts in six shutout innings and got the victory in an eventual 16-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer. Mahlum allowed four hits, no earned runs and had 11 strikeouts while getting a no-decision in an eventual 3-2 win over George Fox.

We expect both to be staff mainstays this summer.

The Beavers are now off all week. They resume play at Sacramento State on April 21-22.

We are now down to 51 days until our June 4 season opener at Goss Stadium against the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet. The Sea Dogs are a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area and former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher. Should be a great day.

UC Irvine sophomore pitcher Elliot Surrey, the 2013 West Coast League ERA leader and our Pitcher of the Year, was nominated for Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors but did not win. He allowed one run on four hits and had seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings on Sunday in a 5-4 win over Cal State-Northridge.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed pitcher Nick Struck (2009), a Mt. Hood CC alum who was released by the Cubs on March 27 after four years in their minor-league system. He has not yet been assigned to a minor-league affiliate.

Huntsville (AA Southern, Brewers) outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in a 7-5 loss to Pensacola on Sunday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

* Kannapolis (A South Atlantic, White Sox) first baseman Danny Hayes (2010) was 2-for-5 with a triple and a run in a 5-4 loss to Greenville.
