Knights open WCL season at Bend tonight

Happy Friday, everyone.

The Knights head to Bend today for the start of West Coast League action. Right-hander Ryan Walker of Washington State is our projected starting pitcher for tonight's 6:35 opener at Vince Genna Stadium. Righty Nick Duron of Clark CC is the projected starter for Game 2, at 6:35 p.m. Saturday; lefty Cole Doherty of Portland gets the ball in Sunday's 1:05 p.m. series finale.

All three games will be on KEJO-AM 1240, with Mike Parker on the call.

We hold a 48-26 all-time regular-season record against the Elks and are 20-16 in games played at Vince Genna Stadium. We host the Elks once June 19-21, and then finish the season series on June 23-25 in Bend. Please click here for more on the Elks, from the Bend Bulletin newspaper.

Oregon State sophomore catcher Logan Ice (2014) was named an honorable-mention Pac-12 all-academic selection on Thursday. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and be either a starter or significant contributor. Congrats to Logan!

Fort Wayne (A Midwest, Padres) outfielder Nick Torres (2012) was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs in a 10-5 win over Beloit on Thursday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

Honorable mention goes to:

* Richmond (AA Eastern, Giants) pitcher Josh Osich (2008) got his 13th save and lowered his ERA to 1.80 with a scoreless ninth to preserve a 4-3 win over Portland.

* Birmingham (AA Southern, White Sox) first baseman Danny Hayes (2010) was 2-for-4 with a run in a 6-4 win over Biloxi. He is hitting .371 over his last 10 games to raise his average to .259 after a slow start.

* Augusta (A South Atlantic, Giants) pitcher Chris Johnson (2011) allowed two runs in five innings, had two strikeouts and got a no-decision in a 3-2 loss to Lexington. He missed last season with injuries.

* Peoria (A Midwest, Cardinals) outfielder Blake Drake (2013) was 2-for-4 with two runs in a 7-3 loss to Great Lakes. Second baseman Jimmy Allen (2011) was 2-for-4 with a run for Great Lakes (Dodgers).

Knights open WCL play at Bend on Friday

Happy Thursday, everyone. Our season got underway on Wednesday with a big win over the Portland Sea Dogs at Goss Stadium on our fourth annual PEAK Internet Science, Engineering & Art Day game, presented by the Oregon State Colleges of Science and Engineering.

A good time was had by all, and it was a great way to kick off our ninth season in Corvallis!

The Knights have today off, and then head to Bend on Friday for the start of West Coast League action. Wednesday's opener drew a crowd of 2,249 on the fourth annual PEAK Internet Science, Engineering & Art Day, presented by the OSU Colleges of Science and Engineering. The record of 2,485 was set in 2014, so the Knights are 236 fans behind last year's pace through a corresponding number of home dates.

Oregon State first baseman and 2015 Knight KJ Harrison was named a Freshman All-American on Wednesday by Collegiate Baseball. Harrison was also named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Year and a first-team Pac-12 all-star last week. He ended the season with a .309 average, 12 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs and a league-leading 60 RBIs.

Harrison just received an invitation to join Team USA. Tryouts start June 18 and if makes the team, the season runs through July 8. So we're not exactly sure when we will see KJ, but we still hope he can make it for at least part of the summer. And, congrats!

Tacoma (AAA Pacific Coast, Mariners) pitcher Sam Gaviglio (2009) allowed four hits and no runs and had five strikeouts over eight innings and got the win in a 6-1 victory over New Orleans on Wednesday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

Honorable mention goes to:

* New Hampshire (AA Eastern, Blue Jays) pitcher Matt Boyd (2010) threw 8.1 scoreless innings, allowed three hits, had six strikeouts and got the win in a 1-0 victory over Bowie. He lowered his ERA to 1.09.

Yakima Valley shut out Walla Walla 2-0 on Wednesday in an exhibition game at The Orchard in Yakima. Mitch Skaggs provided the only runs in the game, delivering a two-out, two-run single to right field in the fifth inning. Here is more on that game, from Our Sports Central.

The Knights begin their ninth season at Goss Stadium with their fourth annual PEAK Internet Science, Engineering & Art Day game, presented by the Oregon State Colleges of Science and Engineering.

It's one of the most popular days at the ballpark for the Knights and a great experience for several thousand elementary school students from throughout the Willamette Valley. The 2014 SEA game drew a near-capacity crowd of 2,485, the largest yet for the promotion.

The Knights will field a makeshift lineup of sorts in the first two weeks of the season, as many of our projected full-time players are still in school. In the meantime, several 10-day signees will take their place and attempt to win full-time positions of their own for the balance of the summer.

Corvallis returns four players from a 2014 club that captured its eighth consecutive division title. The Knights won 10 of their final 11 series and went 24-9 over that span to pull away from Bend and finish 35-19 in league play.

The returnees are third baseman Jackson Soto of Oregon State; pitchers Harrison McGhee of Concordia and Merrick Patito of Chaffey College, and all-WCL first baseman Dalton Kelly of UC Santa Barbara.

Also, pitchers Alex Nesbitt of Washington and Jorge Perez of Grand Canyon, key members of our 2013 WCL championship team, return after missing last summer because of injury.

The Knights open their West Coast League season at 6:35 p.m. Friday in the first of three games at Bend against the arch-rival Elks at Vince Genna Stadium. Ryan Walker of Washington State is our scheduled starter. The Knights swept the Elks 2-0 in the divisional playoffs last summer to advance to the WCL Championship Series for the seventh time in eight seasons.

Corvallis starts the home portion of its WCL season at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday against the Bellingham Bells in a rematch of that aforementioned Championship Series, which the Bells won 2-1 by taking Game 2 and Game 3 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham.

Greensboro (A South Atlantic, Marlins) pitcher Ben Wetzler (2011) allowed one run over 5.1 innings, had two strikeouts and got his first win of the season in a 6-2 victory over West Virginia on Tuesday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

Honorable mention goes to:

* Richmond (AA Eastern, Giants) closer Josh Osich (2008) earned his 12th save with a scoreless ninth inning in a 4-3 win over Portland.

* Mobile (AA Southern, Diamondbacks) outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) hit a two-run homer in a 6-5 win over Pensacola.

* Erie (AA Eastern, Tigers) DH Dean Green (2008) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs in a 10-2 loss to Reading. He's hitting .340.

* High Desert (A California, Rangers) DH Alex Burg (2008) was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his 12th, in a 9-8 win over Lancaster. Alex is hitting .319, with 33 RBIs.

Another roster move to announce. The Knights have signed Pacific Lutheran junior Cory Nelson, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound lefty from Puyallup, Wash., to a 10-day contract. Cory was 5-3 with two saves and a 3.35 ERA in 20 appearances and had 36 strikeouts in 53.2 innings for the Lutes in 2015.

Cory will join us in time for our home-opening series against Bellingham on June 9-11. Welcome to the club!

The Kitsap BlueJackets have signed Creighton lefties John Oltman and Sam Norman for the 2015 season, which starts tonight with a nonleague game against the Thurston County Senators. Kitsap will then host the West Coast Guns on Wednesday before heading to Bellingham to open the WCL season on Friday.

A junior lefty from Cortland, Neb., Oltman is a three-year letterman whose best season was 2014, when he held opponents scoreless in 24 of his 31 appearances and posted a 2.92 ERA. He earned All-State honors after both his junior and senior campaigns at Beatrice High School.

Norman hails from Des Moines, Iowa, where he earned varsity letters in baseball, basketball and football in high school. During his junior season on the diamond, he batted .398, earning second-team all-state honors at first base.

The Knights have signed Linn-Benton Community College outfielder Emilio Alcantar and infielder Trevin Stephens of Linn-Benton CC to 10-day contracts.

Alcantar is a sophomore left-handed hitter from Vancouver, Wash. He led the Roadrunners with a .327 average (32-98) in 29 games, with no homers and eight RBIs.

Stephens is a freshman from Aurora, Ore., who played at Canby High School for ex-Knight JJ Stolsig. He hit .273 (42-154) in 44 games, with a homer and 20 RBIs.

Jupiter (A Florida State, Marlins) pitcher Scott Lyman (2010) allowed four hits and no runs and had three strikeouts over seven innings and got the win in a 2-1 victory over Bradenton on Sunday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors. He improved to 7-1.

Honorable mention goes to:

* El Paso (AAA Pacific Coast, Padres) catcher Rocky Gale (2007, 2009) was 2-for-4 with an RBI in an 8-4 loss to Iowa. He raised his average to .321.

Knights sign LBCC's Musial to 10-day deal

Another roster move to announce, to bolster our pitching staff.

The Knights have signed Linn-Benton Community College pitcher Jacob Musial to a 10-day contract. A 5-foot-10, 180-pound freshman right-hander from Agua Dulce, Calif., Musial was 5-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 11 games this spring, with 61 strikeouts in 66 innings. He started four games and held opponents to a .259 batting average.

He helps fill a void created by the loss of projected Knights Joey Wise of GateWay CC and Justin Vernia of Tacoma CC. A member of the 2014 team, Wise will attend summer school instead. A Gonzaga signee, Vernia has been shut down for the summer after a heavy workload at TCC this spring.

Alum Drew Garcia (2007) has been promoted to triple-A Charlotte of the International League from double-A Birmingham of the Southern League. The UC Riverside product signed with the White Sox out of College, was traded to Colorado during the 2013 season, and re-signed with Chicago as a free agent in the last offseason after being released by the Rockies.

More roster news to announce, as our pitching staff takes a couple more hits.

Gonzaga signee Justin Vernia (2015) of Tacoma Community College is being shut down for the summer and thus won't play for the Knights. He was 11-0, 1.70 and a NWAC West Region first-team all-star, so that is definitely a hit.

Also, returnee Joey Wise of GateWay CC in Arizona will attend summer school, and thus won't return to Corvallis. He was 0-1 with a 2.40 ERA in 12 games, with three saves and 11 strikeouts in 14 innings, for us in 2014.

So, 10-day signee Chase Kaplan of Western Nevada JC has been promoted to full-time status. He was 3-4, 4.39 in 13 games this spring, with 43 strikeouts in 53.1 innings.

Alum Peter Van Gansen (2013), a shortstop at Cal Poly, was named the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team all-star. In 240 chances, the junior from San Fernando, Calif., recorded 83 putouts and 153 assists while committing just four errors for a .983 fielding percentage. He also led the Mustangs with 22 double plays.

Teammate Casey Bloomquist (2013), a right-handed pitcher, earned second-team all-conference honors. He won his final eight decisions as the team's Friday night starter after an 0-2 start, including a 6-0 mark in Big West games, and Cal Poly was 11-0 in his last 11 starts of the season.

Casey is 26-6 in three seasons with the Mustangs, No. 4 all-time on the school career wins list. His 2.79 career ERA ranks No. 9. For more on that story, click here.

Alum Joe Duffin (2013-14) of Connecticut was named to the 2015 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Region team. Joe had a team-high 11 HR and hit .271 (46-170) in 53 games, with 39 RBIs.

Incoming pitcher Justin Vernia of Tacoma Community College was named a NWAC West Region first-team all-star. Alum Bryan Donahue of Mt. Hood was named Coach of the Year. Vernia pitched the Tigers over Edmunds in the opening game of the NWAC tournament on Thursday.

The Kitsap BlueJackets have added freshman pitcher Colten Barnes of Pierce College and junior pitcher Nick Mailhot of St. Martin's for the 2015 season. Both are left-handers.

Barnes is a lefty from University Place who attended Curtis High School. He recently named to the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) Western Region second-team after going 6-4 with a 2.54 ERA in 13 games, 10 of those starts.

Mailhot is from Olympia and attended Northwest Christian, where he was a four-year letter winner, a three-time all-league pick and league MVP as a senior in 2012.

Pitching star Jorge Perez returning in 2015

Good news to report this morning; the Knights have signed veteran Jorge Perez of Grand Canyon University for the 2015 season. Jorge pitched for Corvallis in 2012 and 2013, and was the winner in our 1-0 victory over Wenatchee in the final game of the 2013 WCL Championship Series.

He was sidelined this past spring due to injury; he had bone chips removed from his right elbow. He can return to competition as soon as June 16 with the Knights, and will return to Grand Canyon next spring as a redshirt senior.

Jorge was also rated the WCL's No. 2 pro prospect by Baseball America and Perfect Game in 2013 and was selected in the 30th round of the 2014 draft by the New York Yankees. He also played for the West Division in the 2013 WCL All-Star Game.

The Kitsap BlueJackets have announced the broadcast team of Sven Alskog, Justin Rice and Nikki Torres for the 2015 season.

Alskog, currently at Idaho State University, has previously held roles in the West Coast League with the Bellingham Bells as a Media Assistant and the Klamath Falls Gems as their Promotions and Communications Coordinator. Sven will be the lead voice of the BlueJackets in 2015, also handling media relations duties.

Rice is a recent graduate of Washington State University with a degree in Communication with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism. Justin also worked as a Radio DJ and Broadcaster at KUGR Cougar College Radio, had a sports talk show and called WSU baseball games.

Torres, also at Washington State, has previous communication-related experience working for Seafair, the Pac 12 Network and The Daily Evergreen, among others. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Strategic Communication with a minor in Business Administration at WSU.

Big weekend at Stanford for future Knights

Three future Knights had big weekends for Oregon State as the Beavers swept Stanford in Palo Alto to move into second place in the Paciftic-12 Conference race.

First baseman KJ Harrison was 6-for-13, with a homer, two doubles and seven RBIs; right fielder Elliott Cary was 4-for-10 with five RBIs, and second baseman Christian Donahue was 3-for-12 and scored six times.

Harrison also homered twice in a 20-0 win over Portland on Tuesday, so he is a good bet to earn Pac-12 Player of the Week honors.

All three freshmen will join the Knights when OSU's season is over, following the NCAA tournament and the end of the spring academic term.

The Knights have signed pitcher Branden Cutsforth of Treasure Valley CC. A 6-foot-2, 205-pound freshman right-hander from Independence, Ore., who played at Central High School, Cutsforth was 5-0, 3.86 in 18 games for the Chukars this spring, with 38 strikeouts in 35 innings.

The addition of Cutsforth is the most recent of several moves made by the Knights to bolster a pitching staff that lost several anticipated arms to academics and other reasons.

Ten-day signee Nick Duron of Clark College has been added to the full-time roster to replace returnee Austin Sodders of Riverside CC, a UC Riverside signee who must attend summer school.

The Knights also released pitchers Sean Barry of Santa Barbara City College, Noah Bremer of Washington and Matt Smith of Chapman. They are being shut down for the summer after an extensive spring workload.

New Hampshire (AA Eastern, Blue Jays) pitcher Matt Boyd (2010) pitched seven shutout innings, had four strikeouts, got the win and lowered his ERA to 1.02 in a 5-0 win over Binghamton on Sunday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

Honorable mention goes to:

* High Desert (A California, Rangers) outfielder Alex Burg (2008) was 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, a run and four RBIs in a 14-1 win over Bakersfield.

Mobile (AA Southern, Diamondbacks) outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBNIs in a 4-3 win over Birmingham. First baseman Danny Hayes (2010) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run for Birmingham, the White Sox's affiliate in that league.
