Knights lose pitchers Bremer, Smith

More roster moves to announce as the season draws near, and the innings pile up.

Washington pitcher Noah Bremer and Chapman pitcher Matt Smith will not join us this summer, as was expected. Both are being shut down after a heavy workload this spring.

That is a blow, as Bremer was one of the top freshmen pitchers in the Pac-12 and is s 5-2, 2.10 in 13 games, with 31 strikeouts in 64.1 innings, heading into this weekend's games. Smith was having a solid junior year at Chapman and was 5-2, 2.09 in 10 games, with 64 strikeouts in 56 innings.

But this stuff happens all the time in summer baseball, and we will get by.

We also have a good news/bad news roster move to announce, this one from the major leagues. Tampa Bay recalled pitcher Matt Andriese (2009) from triple-A Durham on May 9, and the WCL's 2009 Pitcher of the Year responded with a four-inning save on Thursday in a 6-1 win over the Yankees.

Then, the Rays activated another pitcher from the DL and sent Andriese back to the International League. Apparently they needed a lefty, not a righty, to balance their staff. Matt is 0-1, 4.79 in seven games with the Rays, with two saves and 13 strikeouts in 20.2 innings. Tampa Bay has already used 20 pitchers this season, so he will be back.

Bellarmine junior outfielder Jes Staples, a 2015 signee, was a first-team Great Lakes Valley Conference all-star. He hit .293 in 50 games, with 16 RBIs. Here are more details on that story.

Also, alum Gus Craig (2013) of Columbia was named the Ivy League's co-Player of the Year. Craig batted .327 (56-for-171) with 37 runs, 13 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 31 RBIs. He is tied for the league lead in runs, ranks second in triples and fourth in hits and RBI. Craig was also named first-team All-Ivy for the second-straight season.

Two Knights alums with ties to Riverside, Calif., are in the news. First, the San Francisco Giants have signed free-agent right-hander Tommy Hanson (2005). He played at Riverside City College and was the 2005 West Coast League Pitcher of the Year.

And the Traverse City Beach Bums of the independent Frontier League have released former UC Riverside lefty Dylan Stuart. (2011-12). He signed with them in the offseason after a brief minor-league career in the Atlanta organization.

Winston-Salem (A Carolina, White Sox) pitcher Jace Fry (2011) allowed one run and three hits and had six strikeouts in seven innings of a 1-0 loss to Salem on Thursday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

Honorable mention goes to:

* High Desert (A California, Rangers) outfielder Alex Burg (2008) hit his seventh homer of the season in a 5-2 loss to Stockton.

Fort Wayne (A Midwest, Padres) outfielder Nick Torres (2012) was 2-for-4 with a triple and a double in an 8-4 loss to Lake County. Third baseman Grant Fink (2011) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs for Lake County in the same game.

CHRIS CLEMENTS: The UC Santa Barbara righty is 2-0, 2.70 in seven games, with nine strikeouts in 13.1 innings.

DAKODY CLEMMER: The Central Arizona JC righty was 6-3, 3.38 in 12 games, with 51 strikeouts in 66.2 innings. His season is over.

COLE DOHERTY: The Portland lefty is 1-5, 6.82 in 10 games, with 30 strikeouts in 33 innings.

NICK DURON: The righty from Clark College in Vancouver is 2-1, 3.75 in 10 games, with 40 strikeouts in 36 innings.

CHASE KAPLAN: The lefty from Western Nevada JC was 3-4, 4.39 in 13 games, with 43 strikeouts in 53.1 innings. His season is over.

Another big night for Matt Duffy

Another big night in MLB for third baseman Matt Duffy (2100) of the San Francisco Giants. Matt was 3-for-4 and drove in a career-high five runs in an 8-1 win over Houston on Tuesday night. Please click here for more on Duff's big game, from MLB.com.

It was the second big game in the past three days for the former Long Beach State star. He had a walk-off single in a 3-2 win over Miami on Sunday. Matt's having a great second year for the team, hitting .300 (21-70) in 24 games, with a homer and 15 RBIs.

Corban University outfielder Hayden Calvert won't join the Knights as expected. He has a shoulder injury and will not play this summer. He hit .212 (22-104) in 36 games, with three homers and 14 RBIs, for the Warriors.

San Jose (A California, Giants) pitcher Chase Johnson (2011) allowed no runs and five hits and had four strikeouts in six scoreless innings in a 4-2 loss to Modesto on Tuesday night to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors. He got a no-decision.

* Tacoma (AAA Pacific Coast, Mariners) pitcher Sam Gaviglio (2009) allowed one run and four hits and had five strikeouts in six innings but got a non-decision in a 4-3 loss to Salt Lake.

The Kitsap BlueJackets have signed pitcher Lane Griffin and first baseman William Colantono of Cal State-Northridge for the 2015 season.

Colantono led the Matadors with 24 walks in 2014, a number which also put him near the top of the Big West leaderboard. The junior from Escondido, Calif., attended San Pasqual High School and earned Avocado East League all-star honors all four years.

Griffin is a freshman who graduated from Puyallup High School in 2014. The right-handed pitcher was a three-sport athlete in baseball, water polo and swimming. On the diamond his team won the league championship all four years, culminating with a state championship his senior season.

Big alum news on the MLB front on Sunday. San Francisco third baseman Matt Duffy (2010) hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to drive in the winning run in a 3-2 victory over Miami at AT&T Park. Please click here for video of Duff's walk-off.

Matt's having a great second year for the team. He's hitting .273 (18-66) in 23 games, with a homer and 10 RBIs.

Not sure how we missed this last week, but it's better to report good news late than to not report it at all.

Washington State's Ryan Walker, a 2015 Knight, was selected as the Pacific-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week for April 27-May 3. In two starts, the Arlington, Wash., right-hander scattered six hits over 11.2 innings, struck out 12 and walked three. At Washington (April 27), the freshman pitched 4.2 shutout innings en route to the 3-0 win. On Sunday (May 3), Ryan scattered two hits over 7.0 scoreless frames, striking out seven and walking one, as the Cougars lost in extra innings.

Walker compiled a 16.1-inning scoreless streak over his last three outings to lower his ERA to 1.69 on the year. Here are complete details, from the Pac-12 website. Congrats to Ryan!

Another Duff, alum Joe Duffin (2013-14) is having a great first season at the University of Connecticut, his new home after spending a year at UC Santa Barbara and a season at Citrus JC.

Joe was named to the American Athletic Conference honor roll last week for hitting.375 with two home runs, a double, eight RBIs and four walks. He leads UConn with a .493 OBP and .636 slugging percentage.

"He really found an awesome team and group of great coaches at U Conn," writes his mother, Linda Duffin. "We are going to miss not coming to Corvallis this summer!! Thanks for all you did for him these last two summers!!!"

So, congrats to Joe. Those are the kinds of success stories we enjoy reading!

It was a big night for some incoming Knights on Tuesday as Oregon State boatraced Oregon 10-2 in a nonconference game at Goss Stadium.

Second baseman Christian Donahue was 2-for-5 with a run; right fielder Elliott Cary was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, and first baseman KJ Harrison was 1-for-4 with three RBIs. So, that's a combined 5-for-12, with five runs and four RBIs.

Some sad news to report as well. Right-handed pitcher Sean Barry of Santa Barbara City College, a first-team Western State Conference North Division all-star, is being shut down for the summer and thus won't play for the Knights. He's already thrown 92 innings and understandably, that's enough.

* Elliot Surrey (2013) of UC Irvine was nominated for Big West Pitcher of the Week honors, but was not selected.

* Nate Esposito (2012) of Concordia was named the Cascade Conference Red Lion Baseball Player of the Week. A senior infielder, Nate had at least one hit in each of the first four NAIA West Tournament games to help propel the Cavs into the finals.

* Corban outfielder Marc Gallegos (2012, 2014) earned NAIA West Group all-star honors.

* Linfield's Chris Haddeland (2014) and Pacific Lutheran's Chris Bishop (2012-14) were named Northwest Conference all-stars. Incoming Knight AJ Valencia (2015) of George Fox earned honorable mention.

Incoming RHP Barry earns all-league honors

Incoming Knight Sean Barry, a right-handed pitcher at Santa Barbara City College, was a first-team Western State Conference North Division all-star. He is 9-3 with a 1.46 ERA, the 10th-best in the state, and has 94 strikeouts in 92.1 innings.

Barry led SBCC to a 5-0 win over Rio Hondo at Pershing Park on Friday in the opener of their WSC best-of-3 playoff series. The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Simi Valley, Calif., retired the first 12 batters on the way to a five-hit shutout, his second complete game of the season.

He was also a CCCAA academic all-state selection, with a 3.84 GPA. Congrats to Sean for both awards.

Alum (1996-98, 2000) and former coach Geoff Loomis has directed Pacific Lutheran to a standout season. The Lutes defeated George Fox 5-1 on Sunday to conclude the regular season with a 30-12 record and the Northwest Conference championship.

The Lutes are ranked No. 21 in the latest d3baseball.com national poll and No. 1 in the most recent NCAA Div. III West Region rankings. PLU reached 30 wins for the fourth time in team history, with all four 30-win seasons coming in the last nine years.

Several former Knights helped the Lutes reach the top. Pitcher Chris Bishop (2012-14) was 7-2 with a 3.19 ERA, and could be in line for all-conference honors. Pitcher Jake Otness (2013-14) was 2-0, 4.26, with a save.

The Lutes will now prepare for NCAA Division III postseason action.

Mobile (AA Southern, Diamondbacks) outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI in a 5-4 loss to Biloxi on Sunday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

* Peoria (A Midwest, Cardinals) outfielder Blake Drake (2013) was 1-for-3 with a solo homer, his third of the week, in a 2-1 win over Burlington.

* Indianapolis (AAA International, Pirates) third baseman Brent Morel (2006-07) was 2-for-5 with a run in a 6-2 win over Lehigh Valley.

* Erie (AA Eastern, Tigers) DH Dean Green (2008) was 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 7-4 loss to Altoona.

Future Knight Elliott Cary has winning hit for Beavers at UW

Big night for the Knights in Seattle on Thursday. Signee Elliott Cary (2015) of Oregon State drove in the winning runs as the Beavers edged Washington 4-2 in 10 innings. Cary has been playing well for the Beavers of late after a slow start.

Also, another 2015 signee, Washington's Noah Bremer, pitched well, allowing no runs and seven hits through 5.1 innings, with six strikeouts. He got a no-decision. UW relieverBrandon Choate (2013-14) was touched for an unearned run in two-third of an inning.

The series continues tonight and on Saturday.

Some tough news on the alumni front. Tampa Bay has returned pitcher Matt Andriese (2009) back to triple-A Durham of the International League. Matt pitched well but got caught up in a roster squeeze when another pitcher came off the disabled list and another could not be returned to the minors because he was out of options.

Knights sign Clark CC pitcher Nick Duron

The Knights have signed pitcher Nick Duron of Clark College in Vancouver, Wash., to a 10-day contract. He is a 6-foot-4, 205-pound freshman from Tigard High School.

He is 1-1 in nine games this season, with a 4.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 24 innings. He was an honorable-mention Pacific Conference all-star at Tigard in 2014.

He also played football at Tigard, where he was first-team all-conference and first-team all-state as a defensive end and honorable mention all-state on offense as a tight end.

Big weekend for Lund, Donahue

It was a big weekend at Goss Stadium for a couple of former and future Knights who play for the Oregon State Beavers.

On Saturday, OSU senior catcher Dane Lund (2011-14) tripled, singled twice, walked and scored two runs, including the winner in the last of the ninth, as the Beavers edged No. 7 SC 3-2.

On Sunday, freshman second baseman Christian Donahue (2015) had three hits, scored three times and drove in two as the Beavers prevailed 9-6 to win the series. Lund had another hit and two RBIs. Freshman outfielder Elliott Cary (2015) added a nice catch in right field, hit and a run and freshman first baseman first baseman KJ Harrison (2015) had an RBI.

* High Desert (A California, Texas) outfielder Alex Burg (2008) was 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a double in a 6-5 win over Inland Empire. Lefty Greg Mahle (2012) was the loser, on an unearned run.

* Lake County (A Midwest, Indians) third baseman Grant Fink (2011) was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in a 6-0 win over Great Lakes.

Yakima Valley and the Walla Walla Sweets will play a free exhibition game on June 3 at The Orchard in Yakima.

"This is a great opportunity for us to welcome fans back to the Orchard, and maybe introduce a few new fans to what Pippins baseball is all about," Yakima Valley president Zachary Fraser said. Knights sign Sundberg to 10-day deal

The Knights League have signed sophomore shortstop Bret Sundberg of Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif., to a 10-day contract. He is a 6-foot-1, 195-pounder from Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, Calif.

Bret is hitting .259 (28-102), with two doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs, in 30 games this season. He was a second-team Big Eight Conference all-star in 2014, when he hit .319 (45-141) in 35 games, with one homer and 19 RBIs.
