Giants return Susac to triple-A
March 30, 2015Happy Monday, everyone. Hope you all had great weekends.

We caught up with Cal Poly junior shortstop Peter Van Gansen (2013) after last Saturday's game at Goss Stadium. Will have a story on how he's doing later this week.
Also touched base with pitcher Casey Bloomquist, (2013) who won Friday night's game. He's doing well too, enjoyed his weekend in Corvallis, and hopes to make it back up here this summer to catch some Knights' baseball if he can.
PVG and Bloomquist had great weekends as the Mustangs won the series 2-1. Pitchers Slater Lee (2015) and Justin Calomeni (2014) and outfielder Josh George (2015) didn't play.

Speaking of Cal Poly, Mustang alum Brent Morel (2006-07) has been assigned to minor-league camp by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He will start the season at triple-A Indianapolis in the International League. He hit .214 (3-14) in nine spring games, with an RBI.
He spent last season at Indy and with the Pirates, so we can only assume he'll be back up in the majors at some point this season. He is the first Corvallis Knight to play in the majors, with the White Sox in 2011.
Rumor has it a Brent Morel bobblehead was in the Cal Poly dugout as a good-luck charm all weekend, but we can't confirm or deny that.

The Giants have returned Oregon State/Knights alum Andrew Susac (2009) to their minor-league camp. He will start the season at Sacramento in the triple-A Pacific Coast League.
Andrew spent the last three months of 2014 with the Giants and earned a World Series ring. Here is more on that story From MLB.com.
It appears alum Matt Duffy (2010) of Long Beach State has made San Francisco's opening-day roster as the fifth infielder. He had a big day on Sunday; here are more details, also from MLB.com.

We have some other alumni news to report.
* The White Sox assigned pitcher Jace Fry (2011) to minor-league camp. He played with Great Falls in the rookie-level Pioneer League in 2014 but was essentially shut down after a heavy workload at OSU.
* Tampa Bay assigned outfielder Cade Gotta (2011) to minor-league camp. The former San Diego Christian standout played for the Rays in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League in 2014.
* The Giants assigned pitcher Chase Johnson (2011) of Cal Poly to minor-league camp. He played at Class A Augusta in 2014.
* Pitcher Matt Andriese (2009) is still in contention for a spot in Tampa Bay's starting rotation. He pitches against Baltimore today. He was at triple-A Durham in 2014.
The 2015 assignments for all our professional alums should be determined shortly. We will have an update when it all shakes out.

Cal Poly visit makes for a Knightsapalooza at Goss

Cal Poly is in town to play the Beavers, so there will be plenty of future/former Knights at Goss Stadium this weekend, led by 2015 Knights-to-be Slater Lee, a right-handed pitcher, and outfielder Josh George.
Alum Knights returning to their old stomping grounds are infielders Peter Van Gansen (2013) and Alec Smith (2014) and pitchers Casey Bloomquist (2013) and Justin Calomeni (2014).
Should be a fun weekend. The Mustangs, who won the Big West Conference title last season, are down a bit this season (7-14) but they have a quality program and it should be a very competitive series.

Speaking of Cal Poly, the Cleveland Indians have returned CPU/Knights alum David Armendariz (2011) to their minor-league camp. He played at Mahoning Valley (Ohio) in the short-season Class A New York-Penn League last year after signing with the Indians following a standout season at Cal Poly Pomona, where he transferred for his senior year.
In other alum news:
* The Indians also assigned third baseman Grant Fink (2011) to minor-league camp. He played in the low-A Midwest League in 2014.
* Texas assigned recently-signed third baseman Alex Burg (2008) to its minor-league camp. He spent last year in the Miami organization at double-A Jacksonville.
* Arizona assigned pitcher Jimmie Sherfy (2011) to minor-league camp. He was at double-A Mobile in 2014.
* Toronto assigned pitcher Matt Boyd (2010) to minor league camp. He played at double-A New Hampshire and Class A Dunedin in 2014.
* St. Louis assigned outfielder Blake Drake (2013) to minor-league camp. He played at Johnson City in the Rookie-level Appalachian League in 2014.

New jobs for broadcasters Burke, Kuhn

Some good news to announce on two of our recent play-by-play broadcasters, Virginia Tech graduate Kevin Burke (2012) and University of Iowa grad Alex Kuhn (2014).
Kevin has accepted a job as the voice of the Salem (Va.) Red Sox in the Carolina League. He worked at Traverse City (Mich.) in the Frontier League last summer and at High Point (N.C.) University this past academic year. He worked in Salem in 2011 before coming out to Corvallis.
Alex has taken a sports talk show/broadcasting job back in Iowa. He worked for KEJO-AM and as the PA voice of Oregon State soccer after his Knights job ended in August before leaving Oregon recently.
We will have more details on each broadcaster on our website very shortly, so stay tuned.
Jason Schwartz (2010) plans to return for his fourth season as the voice of the Lancaster JetHawks in the California League. He has broadcast for three straight championship teams.

Linfield senior Chris Haddeland (2014) was nominated for Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for March 16-22, but was not selected. He pitched a complete-game 8-hitter in a 5-2 win over Pacific on Saturday, with seven strikeouts. He is 4-1, 1.65 in seven starts, with 35 strikeouts in 54.2 innings.

Landazuri named Big West Pitcher of the Week

UC-Riverside sophomore Angel Landazuri, a 2014 Knight who will return this summer, was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday for the week of March 16-22.
Landazuri fanned a career-high 13 Tulane batters in eight innings this past Friday but did not get the decision in an eventual 2-1 win. He surrendered two hits and did not walk a batter.
Landazuri retired the first 16 batters he faced. His 13 strikeouts are the most for a UC Riverside pitcher since former Knight Eddie Orozco (2008-09) had 15 back on March 10, 2012. Landazuri 40 strikeouts and just seven walks so far this season.

* UC Irvine's Elliot Surrey (2013) was nominated for the Big West Pitcher of the Week honor snared by Landazuri.

The Knights have signed Dakody Clemmer, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound freshman right-handed pitcher at Central Arizona JC. He played at Mountain View High School in Vancouver, Wash., under ex-Knight Aaron Coiteux (2004).

Knights sign Mt. Hood's Taylor Travess

The Knights have signed freshman outfielder/infielder Taylor Travess of Mt. Hood Community College to a 10-day contract. A left-handed hitter, he is a graduate of Springfield High School and was a two-time all-league shortstop for the Millers.
A 5-foot-9, 175-pounder, he also played in the Reser's Oregon All-Star Series, and in the Les Schwab Bowl in football after an all-state season at wide receiver. He also played basketball.

Three alums in the minors were assigned back to their organizational spring-training camps late last week. The Chicago White Sox moved first baseman Danny Hayes (2010) and second baseman Drew Garcia (2007), and the Los Angeles Angels moved pitcher Greg Mahle (2012).
Hayes will probably play in high-A this season after spending 2014 at low-A. A free-agent signee, look for Garcia to play at triple-A Charlotte in the International league. Mahle will most likely play high-A as well.

The Wenatchee AppleSox have signed Chris Carns, a freshman right-hander at Seattle University, and Justin Marsden, a high school pitcher who has signed with Seattle, for the 2015 season.

Knights sign Henry Rondeau of LBCC

The Knights have signed sophomore outfielder Henry Rondeau of Linn-Benton Community College, a Corvallis native and former standout at Corvallis High School, to a 10-day contract.
Rondeau played at Feather River College in 2014 and hit .281 (16-57) in 28 games, with no homers and eight RBIs. He was a Mid-Willamette Conference all-star and a first-team 5A all-state selection as a CHS senior. He also played in the Reser's Oregon All-Star Series.

Former Knights' center fielder Connor Hofmann (2012-13) is now playing at the University of San Francisco after transferring from Oregon and sitting out the 2014 season.
He was in the starting lineup this week when the Dons won two games against the Ducks in Eugene. He is hitting .288 (15-52) in 15 games, with a homer, two RBIs and six steals in seven attempts.

Knights galore at Portland/OSU game last night
March 11, 2015Happy Wednesday, everyone.
Lots of former/future Knights in action at Goss Stadium last night as the Beavers defeated Portland 12-3 for the 10th straight win.
The Pilots started four players with Knights' connections: Shortstop Michael Lucarelli (2013-14), our 2014 MVP; center fielder Caleb Whalen (2012); third baseman Cody Lenahan (2013), and second baseman Kevin Farley (2014).
Former/future Knights KJ Harrison (2015) started at catcher, Christian Donahue (2015) started at second base and Michael Howard (2014) started in right field and Gabe Clark (2013) started at DH for OSU. Catcher Logan Ice entered in the fifth inning and Harrison moved to first.
So, at one point eight of the 18 position players, and the DH, were former or future Knights.

Alums Peter Van Gansen (2013) of Cal Poly and Elliot Surrey (2013) of UC-Irvine were nominated for Big West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, but were not selected.
Linfield's Chris Haddeland (2014) was nominated for Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week, but was not selected. He has already won the award twice this young season. Washington's Noah Bremer (2015), last week's winner, was nominated again for Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week but was not selected.
Incidentally, PVG is tearing it up for Cal Poly. He's hitting .429 (24-56) in 13 games, with 11 RBIs. Cal Poly visits OSU later this month.

HAYDEN CALVERT: The Corban outfielder is hitting .196 (10-51) in 18 games, with a homer and seven RBIs.
ELLIOTT CARY: The Oregon State outfielder is hitting .143 (3-21) in 11 games, with no homers or RBIs.
ANDY COSGROVE: The Washington catcher has not played yet.
CHRISTIAN DONAHUE: The Oregon State second baseman is hitting .323 (10-31) in 14 games, with six RBIs.
MICHAEL FARRIS: The outfielder from UC Riverside hasn't played yet.

Knights sign LBCC catcher Tyger Liner

We hope you had as great a weekend as we did watching the Beavers sweep Fresno State. We also checked out the "Banners" hospitality deck on Saturday afternoon and we can promise you will love it this summer.

The Knights have signed Linn-Benton Community College freshman catcher Tyger Liner to a 10-day contract. He's a Corvallis High School graduate who was first-team 5A all-state, a Mid-Willamette Conference all-star and a participant in the 2014 Reser's Oregon All-Star Series.

Alums Josh Osich (2008) and Mitch Haniger (2010) have been returned to minor-league camp by San Francisco and Arizona, respectively. Osich is a left-handed pitcher from Oregon State; Haniger is an outfielder from Cal Poly.
Also, Boston assigned pitcher Kyle Kraus (2009-10) of Portland to its minor-league camp. Pitcher Tyler Anderson (2009) of Oregon signed a one-year contract with Colorado.

Lots of former/future Knights from the University of Portland will be in Corvallis on Tuesday when the Beavers host the Pilots at 5:35 p.m. at Goss Stadium.
Pilots with Knights' connections are infielders Michael Lucarelli (2013-14), our 2014 MVP; Caleb Whalen (2012); Cody Lenahan (2013), Kevin Farley (2014) and Travis Sanders (2015), and pitchers Jackson Lockwood (2014) and Cole Doherty (2015).
Lucarelli is having a great senior year. He's hitting .294 (20-68) in 19 games, with four doubles, a triple, a homer and six RBIs.
The Pilots are struggling, however, as they are 4-15 after being swept in a three-game series at Arizona this past weekend. They fell 14-2 to the Beavers this past Tuesday and have dropped 22 straight to OSU since their last win in the series, back in 2006.
The Beavers are 13-3 and have won nine straight following a four-game home sweep of Fresno State this weekend. Knights' 2015 signee KJ Harrison won Friday's game with a walkoff homer and 2013 Knight Gabe Clark homered on Saturday and Sunday.
