Lots of promotions in upcoming homestand!
June 9, 2014Happy Monday, everyone.
Rough weekend over in Bend, as we lost 2 of 3 to the Elks in our opening West Coast League series. But it's early and many of our full-time players have not reported yet so we expect to get better. Nobody ever won (or lost) a championship on the first weekend of the season.
Our first WCL homestand is Wednesday through next Monday against the expansion Yakima Valley Pippins (Wednesday-Friday), and the Walla Walla Sweets (Saturday-Monday). We have promotions slated for each game.
* Wednesday, 6:40 p.m.: Big League Chew Opening Night presented by AmeriTitle, against Yakima. The first 250 fans get a pouch of Big League Chew, Knights' trading cards and 2014 magnet schedule. Seniors can purchase GA tickets for $2 at Wednesday night games with the exception of July 2.
* Thursday, 6:40 p.m.: Block 15 Thursday presented by KLOO-FM. Enjoy a specially-priced Block 15 brew and $1 hot dogs.
* Friday, 6:40 p.m.: Allann Bros Night.
* Saturday, 7:15 p.m.: Samaritan Health Services Fireworks Night. Enjoy a spectacular fireworks display immediately following the game!
* Sunday, 6:05 p.m.: Field of Dreams Night, presented by Snap Fitness. Celebrate Father's Day by playing catch with dad on the field after the game.
* Monday (June 16), 12:05 p.m.: Business Person Special, presented by the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce. Join us for a game at noon, get away from the office, meet a client and grab lunch at the ballpark! Special ticket prices for Chamber members.
So get on out to the stadium, and help us set a new attendance record for the seventh time in the past eight years! We had a great crowd of 2,485 on Wednesday for our third annual Science, Engineering & Arts Day at the ballpark. That is the largest yet, and puts us 207 fans ahead of last year's pace.
We drew a franchise-record 43,529 fans last year and would like to top that this summer. Of course, we can't do that without you, so we will see you at the ballpark! We will have regular attendance updates so you can follow our progress.

Alums Casey Bloomquist (2013), Peter Van Gansen (2013) and Nick Torres (2012) earned top teams honors at Cal Poly this season. Bloomquist shared the Mike Krukow Top Pitcher Award; Van Gansen won the John Orton Gold Glove Award for the second straight year, and Torres earned the More details are available right here. Congrats to all three players!
By the way, don't be surprised to see Bloomy around the ballpark in the near future. He was supposed to play for Eau Claire in the Northwoods League, but he's been shut down for the summer because of a spring heavy workload and he expects to be visiting in Corvallis shortly.

Infielder Trace Loehr of Rex Putnam High School won't be joining us this season. He has signed with Oakland, which selected him in the sixth round of the MLB draft last Friday. He had signed to play with Oregon State and played for us last Wednesday in our nonleague win over the Portland Sea Dogs. Best of luck to Trace in his pro career.

Alums Chris Rabago (2012-13), Elliot Surrey (2013) and Evan Brock (2010) of UC Irvine are off to Omaha and the College World Series after the Anteaters swept host Oklahoma State in the Super Regionals this past weekend. Surrey got a win on Friday night, giving him two in the postseason; he also defeated Oregon State in the Corvallis Regional.

* Augusta (A South Atlantic, Giants) pitcher Chase Johnson (2011) allowed five hits and no runs in five innings, had three strikeouts, but got a no-decision in a 1-0 win over Lexington on Sunday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

* El Paso (AAA Pacific Coast, Padres) catcher Rocky Gale (2007, 2009) had a pinch-hit single, scored a run and drove in another in a 10-7 win over Reno.

WCL opener at Bend tonight
June 6, 2014Happy Friday, everyone.
We open the 2014 WCL season at Bend tonight, Saturday and Sunday. It also marks the debut of new play-by-play announcer Alex Kuhn, a Dec., 2013 graduate of the University of Iowa who has already fallen in love with Oregon and Corvallis since arriving here this past Saturday. We are excited to hear him call a game.
Our projected starting rotation is Harrison McGhee of Concordia tonight; Derrick Mahlum of PLU on Saturday and Chris Haddeland of Linfield on Sunday. That is a formidable pitching lineup this early in the season so we are confident we will get off to a fast start.

Bend pitching coach Alan Embree announced that Morehead State pitcher Patrick McGuff will get the start tonight when the Elks host the Knights at Vince Genna Stadium. A junior college transfer from Hamilton, Ohio, McGuff was 5-1 with Sinclair Community College in 2014, with a conference ERA of 3.38.

Alum Ben Wetzler (2011), a senior left-handed pitcher at Oregon State, is one of five finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given annually to the nation's top collegiate player. The honor is voted upon and awarded by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
Wetzler finished the 2014 season with a 12-1 record and national-best 0.78 ERA. Opponents tallied just 49 hits off him in 104 innings for a .143 batting average against, also the nation's best number.
He allowed two earned runs in a game just twice, and shut out opponents over at least seven innings of work six times. He finished with four complete games, including his last three starts, and had three shutouts.

Knights win opener

It was a happy Wednesday for the Knights. We defeated the Portland SeaDogs 22-0 at Goss Stadium in a nonconference game in our season opener before more than 2,400 fans on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet.

Ice, Rabago, Keyes, Schultz make all-regional team
June 3, 2014Happy Tuesday, everyone.
Actually, it is a pretty sad Tuesday in Corvallis, in the wake of Oregon State's 4-2 loss to UC Irvine on Monday night in the championship game of the NCAA Corvallis Regional. The Anteaters now move into the Super Regionals at Oklahoma State.
Four players with Knights ties made the all-regional team: OSU catcher Logan Ice (2014); UCI shortstop Chris Rabago (2012, 2013); OSU designated hitter Kavin Kayes (2013), and OSU pitcher Scott Schultz (2011).
UCI pitcher Elliot Surrey (2013), the winner of our Top Pitcher award last summer, didn't make the team but he had a win and a save against the Beavers.
Now that the Beavers are done, we are down to just one more day until we begin the 2014 season. Our opener is set for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday against the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet. Veteran right-hander The Sea Dogs are a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area and former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher.

Alums win three games at Corvallis Regional
June 2, 2014Happy Monday, everyone.
Quite a weekend of baseball over at Goss Stadium at the NCAA Corvallis Regional, and we're not done yet. Oregon State and UC Irvine will meet at 8 o'clock tonight in the championship game, with a Super Regional berth on the line.
Lots of Knights alums figured prominently in the games. Ben Wetzler and Scott Schultz, members of our 2011 WCL championship team, had complete-game victories for the Beavers on Sunday to keep them in the title chase. First baseman Kavin Keyes (2013) had two hits, an RBI and several stellar defensive plays in Sunday night's win over the Anteaters.
UCI lefty Elliot Surrey, our 2013 Top Pitcher, had a brilliant game in defeating OSU on Saturday and Evan Brock (2010) threw a complete game in Sunday's loss. Shortstop Chris Rabago (2012, 2013) has been solid defensively throughout and had two RBIs on Saturday.
We are now down to just two days until we begin the 2014 season at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday against the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet. We open the 2014 WCL season at Bend this Friday-Sunday. Our projected starting rotation is Harrison McGhee of Concordia on Friday; Derrick Mahlum of PLU on Saturday and Chris Haddeland of Linfield on Sunday. That's a formidable pitching lineup this early in the season so we're confident we'll get off to a fast start.
Our first WCL homestand is June 11-13 against the expansion Yakima Valley Pippins and June 14-16 against Walla Walla. Get on out to the stadium!

NCAA regional baseball is on tap for Goss Stadium this weekend. Partner school UC Irvine and UNLV get it started at 2 p.m., and the host Beavers entertain North Dakota State at 8 p.m.

Three alumni pitchers earned top national honors on Wednesday as Oregon State's Ben Wetzler (2011) and Jace Fry (2011) and Cal Poly's Casey Bloomquist (2013) were named to Louisville Slugger All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball.
Wetzler was 11-1, 0.76 in the regular season; Fry was 11-1, 1.43 and Bloomquist was 12-1. 1.60. They will also play in the NCAA tournament, which starts Friday at regionals at Goss Stadium, at Cal Poly, and at 14 other sites across the country.

The Knights were well-represented on this year's Big West Conference all-star team. The highest honor went to Larry Lee of longtime partner school Cal Poly, who earned Coach of the Year honors.

The Knights have signed sophomore right-hander Harrison McGhee of Concordia University in Portland.
McGhee was an NAIA-West all-star in 2014 and was 5-3 with a 1.45 ERA in 12 games, with 96 strikeouts in 86.2 innings. He led the Cascade Collegiate Conference in strikeouts and was third in ERA. He graduated from Ramona HS in Ramona, Calif.
He helps fill the void left by the loss of Oregon pitchers Stephen Nogosek (2013) and Jordan Spencer, of UC Irvine's Michael Martin and of Western Oregon's Zach Kayser, all of whom are being shut down for the summer and thus won't play for us as expected.

Alum Dylan Stuart (2011, 2012) of UC Riverside was nominated for Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for May 19-25, but was not selected. Dylan pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless relief, had two strikeouts and got the win in an 8-6 victory at Hawaii on May 24 in the Highlanders' penultimate game of the season.
