Knights sign Linfield standout Cunningham

The Knights have signed sophomore left-handed pitcher Cason Cunningham of Linfield College for the upcoming season. A graduate of Sheldon High School in Eugene, he was 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA in 13 games, with 66 strikeouts in 56 innings.

A 6-foot, 195-pounder who served in the Marines before enrolling at Linfield, Cunningham lettered five times in baseball and wrestling at Sheldon. He was a second-team Southwest Conference all-star as a senior and an honorable-mention choice as a junior.

The Knights have signed sophomore lefty Tanner Cantwell of Treasure Valley CC, a graduate of Marist High School. He was 10-3 with a 2.03 in 15 games in 2016, with 85 strikeouts in 75 innings. He also plays first base and hit .259 (15-58) in 25 games, with 13 RBIs.

Signing 10-day contracts were junior utility man Brady Rediger of Linfield and junior infielder Kyle Esquerra of George Fox University.

Rediger graduated from West Salem High School and is a two-year letterman. He hit .257 (18-70) in 24 games in 2016, with 10 RBIs. Esquerra, a Horizon Christian graduate from Tualatin, hit .387 (29-75) in 23 games in 2016, with 10 RBIs.

The 2017 West Coast League season will begin on June 1, when the Victoria HarbourCats visit the new Port Angeles Lefties at Civic Field in the Lefties' initial game in Port Angeles as the league's newest member.

The Knights have not yet finalized our entire 2017 schedule, but we begin league play at Cowlitz on June 2.

The relocation of the Kitsap franchise to Port Angeles has resulted in a minor divisional realignment for the 2017 season. The Lefties were moved from the South Division to the North Division; however, the league divisional structure and split-season playoff format remain intact.

The 2017 WCL All-Star Game will be hosted by the Yakima Valley Pippins on Tuesday, July 18, at Yakima County Stadium.

The league schedule features 54 contests, with each team playing a balanced schedule. The WCL regular season concludes Sunday, Aug. 6, and the WCL playoffs, a four-team postseason to determine the league champion, begin on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

Knights sign Austin Crowson of Monroe

The Knights have signed pitcher Austin Crowson, a 6-foot-5 sophomore lefty at Lane CC who played at Monroe High School, for the 2017 season.

Crowson was 6-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 44.2 innings pitched in 10 games for the Titans in 2016. He was 4-1, 2.81 in six conference games, with 29 strikeouts in 25.2 innings. He then played for the Medford Rogues in the Great Northwest League in 2016 and went 2-1, 1.77 in five games, with 15 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.

He was the state 2A/1A Player of the Year in 2015, helping the Dragons win the state championship, and then played for Bi-Mart Challengers American Legion team in Eugene.

Welcome to the Knights, Austin.

Former Knight Cody Lenahan (2013), an infielder in the independent American Association, was traded from the Texas Airhogs to the Sioux City Explorers earlier this month. He hit .264 (87-329) for Texas in 90 games in 2016, with 12 homers and 49 RBIs.

Cody played at Portland and helped lead the Knights to the 2013 West Coast League championship. He was second-team all-WCL, a South Division All-Star, and was ranked as the WCL's No. 14 pro prospect by Perfect Game.

Righty Ty Fox to return in 2017

More good news to report on the signings front.

Right-hander Ty Fox of Sacramento State will return in 2017. Now at Sacramento State after two seasons at Western Nevada, the Crater, Ore., native went 1-0, 1.50 for us in three games in 2016 as a 10-day signee.

He joins lefty Jacob Fricke of Western Oregon and right-handed pitchers Grant Goodman (San Francisco), Tanner Howell (Dixie State) and Louis Crow (San Diego) as returnees to our pitching staff from 2016.

The Knights have also signed freshman pitcher Connor Redmond of Cal Poly and freshman outfielder Tyler Villaroman of the University of San Francisco.

Redmond is from Danville, Calif., and played at De La Salle High School. He was the East Bay Times newspaper's Player of the Year for hitting .432 and leading De La Salle to an undefeated East Bay Athletic League season and the North Coast Section Division 1 championship.

He also was the closer, saving three games with a 1.99 ERA. He earned EBAL Most Valuable Player honors.

Villaroman is from San Mateo, Calif., and played at Serra High School. He was a first-team West Coast Athletic League all-star, team captain, and the Danny Frisella Award winner as a senior and s second-team all-star as a junior.

He also played for the San Mateo Shockers American Legion team that took third place at the American Legion World Series. He won Most Valuable Player honors in the Boulder, Colo., Region en route to the ALWS.

The Knights have named former intern Eric Bober as our new Director of Tickets and Operations. He first worked for the team from September through December, 2015.

Bober grew up in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, Ill., and earned his BS in Forest and Recreation Management and his MS in Sport Management and Administration from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Jacob Fricke to return in 2017

More good news to report on the signings front.

Left-handed pitcher Jacob Fricke of Western Oregon will return in 2017 after helping lead the Knights to the 2016 West Coast League championship as an invaluable starter and reliever.

A WOU sophomore from Glide, Ore., Fricke was 5-0, 2.88 in 14 WCL games, with 25 strikeouts in a team-leading 50 innings. He also had a 3.17 ERA in two playoff appearances, with one strikeout in 5.2 innings, and earned honorable-mention all-WCL honors.

He is the fourth member of our 2016 pitching staff to sign on for the 2017 season. Also returning are right-handers Grant Goodman (San Francisco), Tanner Howell (Dixie State) and Louis Crow (San Diego).

A record 11 Aloha/Corvallis Knights alums appeared in Major League games during the 2016 season and LHP Josh Osich (2008) of the Giants and LHP Marc Rzepczynski (2006) of the Nationals will appear in the postseason playoffs.

Here is a roundup of our 2016 Knights in MLB, with position players first, followed by the pitchers:

MATT DUFFY (2010, GIANTS/RAYS): A shortstop/third baseman from Long Beach State, Matt hit .258 (86-333) with five homers and 28 RBIs in 91 games. He started the season in San Francisco, was traded to Tampa Bay, and was shut down in mid-September by an Achilles injury.

MITCH HANIGER (2010, DIAMONDBACKS): An outfielder from Cal Poly, Mitch hit .229 (25-109) with five homers and 17 RBIs in 34 games in two stints with Arizona after a monster season with Reno in the Pacific Coast League. He was named an organizational all-star by MILB.com. Please click here for more on that story.

CHRIS STEWART (2001, PIRATES): A catcher from Riverside City College, Chris battled a left knee injury all season and hit .214 (21-98) with a homer and seven RBIs before being shut down in mid-September.

ANDREW SUSAC (2009, BREWERS): A catcher from Oregon State, Andrew hit .235 (4-17) with a homer and two RBIs in nine games. He started the season in the San Francisco organization and was traded to Milwaukee in August. He hit a two-run homer in his final at-bat of the season; please click here for a video of that blast.

TYLER ANDERSON (2009, ROCKIES): A left-handed pitcher from Oregon, Tyler was 5-6, 3.54 in 19 games, with 99 strikeouts in 119 innings in his rookie season. He was the first Corvallis Knight to be selected in the first round of the MLB draft, in 2011.

MATT ANDRIESE (2009, RAYS): A right-handed pitcher from UC Riverside, Matt was 8-8, 4.37 in 29 games with Tampa Bay, with one save and 109 strikeouts in 127.2 innings.

MATT BOYD (2010, TIGERS): A left-handed pitcher from Oregon State, Matt was 6-5, 4.53 in 20 games, with 82 strikeouts in 97.1 innings.

BUD NORRIS (2006, BRAVES/DODGERS): A right-hander from Cal Poly, Bud was a combined 6-10, 5.10 in 35 games with Atlanta and the Dodgers, with 102 strikeouts in 113 innings. He was released in late September and is now a free agent.

GREG MAHLE (2012, ANGELS): The lefty from UC Santa Barbara was 1-0, 5.40 in 24 games, with 14 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. He was recalled from triple-A Salt Lake of the PCL on Monday to keep him on the 40-man roster.

JOSH OSICH (2008, GIANTS): A left-handed pitcher from Oregon State, Josh was 1-3, 4.71 in 59 games, with 25 strikeouts in 36.1 innings.

MARC RZEPCZYNSKI (2006, A'S/NATIONALS): A left-handed pitcher from UC Riverside, Zep was a combined 1-0, 2.64 in 70 games with the A's and the Nationals. He had 46 strikeouts in 47.2 innings.

Knights sign two from UCSB, one from Nevada for 2017

We have three more signings to announce for the 2017 season as we build a club to defend our 2016 WCL championship.

The newest Knights are Zak Herbers, a freshman right-handed pitcher from the University of Nevada, and freshman left-handed pitcher Jack Dashwood and freshman shortstop Andrew Martinez of UC Santa Barbara.

Herbers is a 6-foot-2, 180-pounder from Capo Valley High School in Capistrano, Calif. A three-year letterman, he was 7-4, 2.92 in 11 games as a senior, with 50 strikeouts in 52.2 innings.

A 6-6, 220-pounder, Dashwood graduated from St. Augustine High School in San Diego. Also a three-year letterman, he hit .382 (29-94) in 29 games, with a homer and 13 RBIs, and was 6-2, 1.03 in 11 games as a pitcher, with 67 strikeouts in 61 innings.

As a junior, he hit .377 with four homers and 26 RBIs and was 9-4 in 14 games as a pitcher, with 90 strikeouts in 82.1 innings.

Martinez is a 5-11, 175-pounder from St. Francis HS in Mountain View, Calif. Another three-year letterman, he hit .310 (27-87) in 33 games as a senior, with three homers and 21 RBIs, and .419 (31-97) in 32 games as a junior, with no homers and 22 RBIs.

The Wenatchee AppleSox have named Kyle Krustangel as their new head coach. He coached the Yakima Pepsi Beetles in American Legion baseball in 2016 and led them to the quarterfinals of the Washington state tournament.

Krustangel will retain his position as baseball coach at Yakima Valley College, where he guided the Yaks to the NWAC title in his first season last spring. Here is more on that story, from Our Sports Central.

Knights add three more players for 2017

The Knights have signed three more players for the 2017 season, president Dan Segel and coach Brooke Knight announced this week.

They are catcher Jace Duty of Chemeketa Community College in Salem, a native of Newport, Ore.; pitcher Darren Nelson, a senior at Granite Bay High School in Granite Bay, Calif., who will play at Cal Poly in 2017-18, and freshman pitcher Trenton Toplikar of UC Riverside via West Hills HS in Santee, Calif.

Duty played in two games for the Bend Elks in 2016 and hit .250 (1-4) with a run and an RBI. He hit .260 (38-146) with a homer and 22 RBIs in 44 games overall, and .310 (26-84) with a homer and 12 RBIs in 25 NWAACC games.

Nelson is a 6-foot-8, pitcher/first baseman. He was 7-2, 0.50 in 10 games as a pitcher, with 50 strikeouts in 42.1 innings, and hit .333 (24-72) in 23 games, with a homer and 20 RBIs.

Toplikar is a 62, 190-pound righty from West Hills HS in San Diego. He was a two-year starter and also played soccer.

They join returning pitchers Louis Crow of San Diego, Tanner Howell of Dixie State and Grant Goodman of San Francisco, all of whom signed earlier this month.

Alums Duffy, Stewart shut down for the season

Alums Matt Duffy (2010) of Tampa Bay and Chris Stewart (2001) of Pittsburgh have been shut down for the balance of the major-league season because of nagging injuries.

Duffy, a shortstop who played at Long Beach State, was put on the 60-day DL on Sept. 8 with a left Achilles tendon injury that eventually required surgery. He hit a combined .258 (86-333) in 91 games with the Giants and the Rays, who acquired him in a trade with San Francisco on Aug. 1.

Stewart, a catcher who played at Riverside City College, was put on the 60-day DL on Sept. 13 with a left-knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday. He was on the DL earlier this season with the same problem, which undoubtedly contributed to a sub-par offensive season. He hit .219 (21-98) in 34 games, with a homer and seven RBIs, after hitting .294 in 2014 and .289 in 2015.

University of San Francisco junior pitcher Grant Goodman will return to the Corvallis Knights for the 2017 season, president Dan Segel announced Thursday. A 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander from Burlingame, Calif., Goodman was a key contributor on our 2016 WCL championship club. He was 2-0 with a 1.73 ERA in 12 appearances (nine starts), with 53 strikeouts in 41.2 innings.

He also earned honorable-mention all-WCC honors. Welcome back, Grant!

Former Oregon State outfielder and Knights' alum Braden Wells (2007)

has been named the new head coach at Skagit Valley (Wash.) Community College. He was a volunteer assistant coach at Washington State in 2016 after serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Concordia University from 2013-15.

A native of Glendale, Ariz., Wells played at OSU in 2007 and 2008 and began his coaching career as an OSU undergraduate assistant in 2009. He then was a graduate assistant at Grand Canyon in 2011-12 before going to Concordia.

Braden played two seasons at Dixie State Junior College in Utah before going to OSU. He was a 32nd-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Angels in 2005 and earned first-team all-region honors as sophomore in 2006. He graduated from Brophy Prep High School in Glendale.

Congrats to Braden.

Bishop named Perfect Game's top WCL prospect

Corvallis left-handed pitcher Cameron Bishop is ranked as the No. 1 pro prospect in the West Coast League by Perfect Game. The UC Irvine junior was one of eight members of the 2016 WCL-champion Knights on the 30-player list, compiled by reporter Mike Rooney.

Bishop was 1-3 with a 1.45 ERA in seven games WCL regular-season games, with 43 strikeouts in 31 innings. Overall, he struck out 56 over 40 innings pitched. Earlier this fall he was ranked as the WCL's the No. 2 prospect by Baseball America.

He was also rated as the No. 1 prospect at the WCL All-Star Game as voted on by the pro scouts in attendance and was named second-team all-WCL. Eight Knights were ranked in the top 30; here is more on that story from our website.

Outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) of the Arizona Diamondbacks was named to Baseball America's 2016 all-classification minor-league all-star team for his play with the triple-A Reno Aces. He was a second-team selection.

The Kitsap BlueJackets are moving from Silverdale, Wash., to Port Angeles, Wash., for the 2017 season and will be known as the Port Angeles Lefties. They will play their home games at Civic Field in downtown Port Angeles. Haniger, Boyd, Susac back in major leagues

Alums Mitch Haniger (2010), Matt Boyd (2010) and Andrew Susac (2009) were all recalled to the major leagues on Tuesday, shortly after the end of their respective triple-A seasons. Haniger is back with Arizona; Boyd is with Detroit, and Susac is with Milwaukee.

Alum Jes Staples (2015) of Bellarmine has been named a volunteer assistant coach for the team. Staples was a four-year starter in the outfield, and ranks third on the career hits list, fifth in triples, seventh in runs scored and tied for ninth in stolen bases. Staples will be the first-base coach and work with the outfielders along with hitters and baserunners.

* Montgomery (AA Southern, Rays) outfielder Cade Gotta (2011) was 1-for-3 with a double and a run in a 2-1 loss to Jackson in the Southern League playoffs.

* Lynchburg (A Carolina, Indians) reliever Trevor Frank (2012) had one strikeout in 1.1 scoreless innings against Potomac in the Carolina League playoffs.
