Kline named PacWest Player of the Week

Happy Wednesday, everyone.

Oregon State's 4-3 win over Ohio State last night was a great end to a super homestand. The Beavers went 9-1 and are not red-hot and rolling as they head off to Utah for this weekend's opening series of the Pacific-12 Conference season.

They don't return to Goss until March 21, when they host Arizona State in a weekend series.

The Knights will be returning to Goss Stadium in 84 days, when we begin our 2014 season with a June 4 nonleague opener against the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet. The Sea Dogs are a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area and former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher.

Returnee Kevin Kline (2013-14) of Dixie State was named the PacWest Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday. Keven hit .400 (6-14) in four games against Saint Martin's, with two doubles, two home runs, five runs scored, 12 RBIs and a .933 slugging percentage. He drove in five runs in the second game and six of Dixie State's 17 runs in the series finale and now ranks third in the PacWest with 17 RBI.

Lots of 2014 Knights in action for their respective college teams on Tuesday. Here's a roundup:

* Oregon State catcher Logan Ice was 0-for-2 with an RBI in a 4-3 win over Ohio State. Gabe Clark (2013) was 0-for-4, Kavin Keyes (2013) was 1-for-3 and Brandon Jackson (2012) struck out on in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

* Pitcher Justin Calomeni of Cal Poly allowed one earned run in 6.1 innings and struck out nine in a 4-2win over Northern Illinois and improved to 4-0. Nick Torres (2012) was 1-for-4 with an RBI, Jimmy Allen (2011) was 2-for-4 and Peter Van Gansen (2013) was 0-for-2 for the Mustangs.

* Pitcher Michael Miller of UC Irvine had one strikeout in a scoreless inning of relief in a 5-0 loss to UCLA. Chris Rabago (2012-13) was 0-for-4 for the Anteaters.

* Angel Landazuri of UC Riverside pitched three scoreless innings and had three strikeouts in an 11-6 win over Gonzaga. Dylan Stuart (2011-12) allowed two runs in two innings and David Andriese (2010-11) was 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs for UCR.

* Scott Quinlan was 0-for-1 for UC Santa Barbara in a 2-1 win over Pepperdine. Greg Mahle (2012) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, had three strikeouts and got the win.

* Portland's Jackson Lockwood pitched seven shutout innings, struck out three and got the win in a 6-0 victory over Seattle. Michael Lucarelli was 0-for-4; Cody Lenahan (2013) was 0-for-4 with an RBI and Caleb Whalen (2012) was 1-for-2 for the Pilots.

* Joe Duffin of Cypress CC was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in a 6-2 loss to Saddleback CC.

* Phillip Leopold of Bellarmine was a combined 2-for-8 with a double and an RBI in a doubleheader with Lincoln Memorial.

The Milwaukee Brewers have returned outfielder Mitch Haniger of Cal Poly to their minor-league camp after several weeks with the big boys. He played in the High-A Florida State League for the second half of last season and is a good bet to move up to the double-A Huntsville (Ala.) Stars in the Southern League. Pitcher Kyle Kraus (2009-10) of the University of Portland was also assigned to minor-league camp by the Boston Red Sox.

ROCKY GALE (2007, 2009), Padres: A catcher, Rocky is hitting .750 (3-4) in five games, with an RBI. Rocky played at Portland.

SAM GAVIGLIO (2009), Cardinals: A right-handed pitcher, Sam is 0-0, 3.38 in three appearances, with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Sam played at Oregon State.

MITCH HANIGER (2010), Brewers: An outfielder, Mitch hit .500 (5-10) in seven games, with a homer and five RBIs, before being sent to minor-league camp. Mitch played at Cal Poly.

BRENT MOREL (2007), Pirates: A third baseman, Brent is hitting .118 (2-17) in eight games, with no homers or RBIs. Brent played at Cal Poly.

Pacific Lutheran's Derrick Mahlum (2014) was nominated for Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, but was not selected. He pitched seven shutout innings and got the win against Whitman on Saturday, allowing five hits and striking out eight in a 4-1 victory.

Another weekend, another alum no-hitter

Happy Monday, everyone.

Great weekend in Corvallis, with Knights' alums playing a big role in helping the Beavers sweep Northern Illinois. Pitchers Ben Wetzler, Jace Fry and Scott Schultz from our 2011 West Coast League championship team all won games and Gabe Clark and Kavin Keyes from our 2013 championship team and future Knight Logan Ice (2014) all had big offensive weekends.

And how about Fry? He became the second alum in the past two weekends to pitch a no-hitter in a Saturday game when he twirled a masterpiece against the Huskies in Game 1 of their doubleheader. Chris Bishop (2012-14) of Pacific Lutheran also threw a no-hitter against Willamette on March 1.

The sun is out in Corvallis this morning and our other hometown team, the Oregon State Beavers, hosts Northern Illinois in a four-game series this weekend, so what more could a guy ask for?

Alums of the Corvallis Knights will play a key role for the Beavers, as usual. Jace Fry (2011) and Scott Schultz are OSU's projected starting pitchers for Saturday's 12:35 p.m. doubleheader. And alum Ben Wetzler (2011) should get the ball for Sunday's 1:05 p.m. series finale.

Throw in alums Kavin Keyes (2013) at first base, Gabe Clark (2013) at DH, Nate Esposito (2012) at catcher and Caylen Clardy (2012) at outfield; relievers Kevin Flemer (2013) and Brandon Jackson (2012) out of the bullpen and future Knights Logan Ice (2014) behind the plate and infielder Dan James (2014) off the bench and it's easy to see why the Knights have such a vested interest in our landlords at Goss Stadium.

Alums Peter Van Gansen and Casey Bloomquist, Cal Poly sophomores who were key members of our 2013 West Coast League championship team, will play with the Eau Claire (Wisc.) Express in the Northwoods League this summer. PVG was all-WCL at shortstop and Casey earned honorable mention at pitcher.

It was a Knightspalooza over at Goss Stadium on Tuesday night in Oregon State's 5-0 win over Portland. Five of the 16 position player starters were former, current or future Knights.

Portland shortstop Mike Lucarelli (2013-14) was 0-for-3; third baseman Cody Lenahan (2013) was 0-for-4 and had a brilliant, diving stop and throw to take an RBI single away from Dylan Davis, and second baseman Caleb Whalen (2012) was 1-for-2 and had a double stolen from him on a great catch by Michael Conforto against the left-field fence.

For the Beavers, first baseman Kavin Keyes (2013) was 0-for-2 with a run and catcher Logan Ice (2014) was 1-for-4 with a run.

Bishop's no-hitter tops weekend action

Hope you all had a great weekend. The Blog ran into Knights' head coach Brooke Knight and Miami scout Gabe Sandy, a former Knights' assistant coach, at the Oregon State game on Sunday. They were wet, but were doing well.

We're now down to 93 more days until our June 4 nonleague opener against the independent Portland Sea Dogs, a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area. Former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher.

You may have already seen this on our Facebook page, but 2012-13 alum/2014 Knights pitcher Chris Bishop of Pacific Lutheran threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in the program's history on Saturday in a 10-0 win over Willamette at John Lewis Field in Salem. Bishop struck out five, walked one and hit a batter.

I guess we already know who will earn Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on Tuesday, huh? Here's more on Bishop's feat, from the PLU website. Congrats to Chris, who was second-team all-WCL in 2013.

Alum Eric Huson (2013) of Western Oregon was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, Huson earned his second victory of the season with an eight-inning start against Central Washington Saturday. Huson scattered six hits and one walk over his eight frames, allowing one earned run and had six strikeouts.

Padres invite Rocky Gale to major-league camp

Thursday was a big day for alum Rocky Gale (2007, 2009), a former University of Portland catcher. He was invited to major-league camp by the San Diego Padres.

Rocky has been in their farm system since 2010 and last year hit .2009 (4-20) in eight games at triple-A Tucson and .246 in 62 games at double-A San Antonio. Congrats to Rocky!

It was also a big day for some 2013 Knights who will return to the club this summer for their second year in Corvallis.

* San Diego's Grant Melker was 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base in a 5-2 win over UNC-Wilmington.

* Dixie State's Kevin Kline was a combined 4-for-9 with a homer, a double, three runs and two RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of No. 1 California Baptist.

* Cypress College's Joe Duffin was 2-for-5 with a solo homer in a 13-inning, 2-1 win over Orange Coast College.

Looks like a nice day for Oregon State's home opener, set for 5:05 p.m. at Goss Stadium against Wright State of Ohio. It's the first of a four-game series and a 10-game homestand.

Lots of Knights connections will be featured. Alum Jace Fry (2011) is the projected starter for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader; the Game 2 starter could be alum Scott Schultz, another 2011 alum. Alum Ben Wetzler (2011) will start Sunday's game after being released from the NCAA's jail.

Alums Kavin Keyes (2013) And future Knight Logan Ice (2014) will start at first base and at catcher for the Beavers, with Gabe Clark (2013) and Dan James (2014) available off the bench and Kevin Flemer (2013) and Brandon Jackson (2012) available out of the bullpen.

Wright State is the alma mater of former Corvallis star Corey Davis (2010, 2011). He played for the Raiders in 2011 and 2012 and earned Horizon League all-star honors.

Speaking of opening days, the first one of the local baseball season is just one day away. Oregon State hosts Wright State of Ohio at 5:05 p.m. Friday at Goss Stadium to start a four-game series that kicks off the Beavers' home schedule.

Lots of Knights/OSU connections this season. Alum Jace Fry (2011) is the scheduled starter for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader; the Game 2 starter could be Scott Schultz, another 2011 alum.

And alum Ben Wetzler (2011) will start Sunday's game after being re-instated by the NCAA following a ridiculous 11-game suspension stemming from the 2013 draft. Shame on the Phillies, and even bigger shame on the NCAA.
