Armendariz named CCAA's Most Valuable Player
May 9, 2014Happy Friday, everyone.
Hope the weather cooperates for this weekend's big Oregon State series with defending NCAA-champion UCLA at Goss Stadium. Tonight doesn't look good, but it should be fine for Saturday and Sunday and since Saturday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m. they could probably play an afternoon game if tonight's scheduled 7:35 game is scrubbed.
Alum Ben Wetzler (2011) is tonight's scheduled starter for OSU; alum Jace Fry (2011) will go on Sunday.
Speaking of baseball at Goss Stadium, it's now just 26 more days until our season opener, a June 4 nonconference game against the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet.
The Sea Dogs are a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area and former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher.

Alum David Armendariz (2011) of Cal Poly Pomona, the MVP of our 2011 West Coast League championship team, has been named the MVP of the California Collegiate Athletic Association after a great season. Here is more on that story, from the CCAA website.
Congrats to David, who was one of the most popular players from that club! He was 2-for-5 with two runs, a double and three RBIs on Thursday in a 9-4 win over Sonoma State in the first round of the CCAA tournament in Stockton.

A trio of alumni moves to announce.
* Arizona has promoted pitcher Jimmie Sherfy (2011) to Mobile of the double-A Southern League from Visalia of the advanced-A California League.
* The Dodgers have assigned pitcher Nick Struck (2009) to Chattanooga in the double-A Southern League. They signed him as a free agent after he was released by the Cubs in spring training.
* Infielder Carter Bell (2009) of Oregon State has signed with the Washington (Pa.) Wild Things of the independent Frontier League. He was recently released by Arizona after spending three seasons in their minor-league system.

* Fresno (AAA Pacific Coast, Giants) catcher Andrew Susac (2009) celebrated his activation from the disabled list by going 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a double in a 7-4 win over El Paso on Thursday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors. He had been sidelined with a concussion.

* Richmond (AA Eastern, Giants) shortstop Matt Duffy (2010) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs in a 6-5 loss to Erie.
* Huntsville (AA Southern, Brewers) outfielder Mitch Haniger (2010) was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in a 7-3 win over Jackson.
* Lake County (A Midwest, Indians) third baseman Grant Fink (2011) hit two solo homers in a 5-1 win over Bowling Green.
Kannapolis (A South Atlantic, White Sox) first baseman Danny Hayes (2010) was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs in a 9-2 win over Lakewood.

Alum David Armendariz (2011) of Cal Poly Pomona, the MVP of our 2011 West Coast League championship team, had a great senior season with the Broncos after transferring from Cal Poly. He led the California Collegiate Athletic Association in homers (9) and RBIs (50), while hitting .326 in 43 games. CPP finished fourth in the league standings and will play in the CCAA tournament in Stockton, starting today.

Alum Scott Stone (2013) of Central Washington was named to the 2014 Great Northwest Athletic Conference's Baseball Academic All-Conference Team. A senior from Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, he has a cumulative 3.44 GPA in Exercise Science. Congrats to Scott!

Alum Scott Schultz gets big win for Beavers
May 7, 2014Happy Wednesday, everyone.
Even though it didn't count in the Pac-12 standings, it still was a big win for the Beavers in Eugene last night, 4-3 over Oregon in 12 innings. That's four in a row this season and six in a row overall in Civil War rivalry.
Alum Scott Schultz (2011) got the victory with 4.1 shutout innings of relief. He was one of numerous former/future Knights to play in the game, which drew a disappointing crowd of only 1,798 to PK Park.
For the Beavers, catcher Logan Ice (2014) was 1-for-5 and scored the winning run; first baseman Dan James (2014) was 0-for-4, and first baseman Gabe Clark (2013) was 0-for-1.
For the Ducks, losing pitcher Jordan Spencer (2014) allowed one run in 1.2 innings, with one strikeout. Starter Stephen Nogosek (2013-14) had six strikeouts and allowed one run in there innings.
The teams play for the final time in the regular season on May 20, again at PK Park.

There's a Civil War nonconference game at PK Park in Eugene tonight. It's nowhere near as important as the three Pac-12 games the Beavers won last month, but it should be interesting nonetheless. It is on the Pac-12 Network, so we will be watching.

Alum/2014 Knight Kevin Kline (2013-14) of Dixie State was named co-PacWest Player of the Week for April 28-May 4. Kline hit .429 (6-14) with four doubles, one homer, eight RBIs and five runs in a four-game series against Fresno Pacific that concluded DSU's regular season. He led the PacWest in RBI (54), was second in doubles (20) and third in total bases (104).

Alums Casey Bloomquist (2013) of Cal Poly and Evan Brock (2010) of UC Irvine were nominated for Big West Pitcher of the Week honors, but were not selected.
Bloomquist allowed two runs and had three strikeouts in six innings and got the decision in a 7-2 win over UC Riverside on Sunday. Brock pitched seven shutout innings, had four strikeouts and got the win in a 7-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. UCSB's Greg Mahle had six innings of shutout relief in that game.

Alum Austin Barr (2012), a sophomore catcher at Stanford from Camas, Wash., will play for the Madison Mallards in the Northwoods League this summer. The Joliet Slammers of the independent Frontier League have placed former Knights' outfielder Nick Akins (2007) on the suspended list for undisclosed reasons. He hit .302 for the Slammers in 2013, with 21 homers and 62 RBIs in 68 games.

The Toronto Blue Jays have promoted alum Matt Boyd (2010) to New Hampshire of the double-A Eastern League from Dunedin of the high-A Florida State League. Matt made his debut last night and gave up two runs in four innings, with four strikeouts. He was 4-0, 0.29 in five starts at Dunedin, with 37 strikeouts in 31 innings.
The Miami Marlins have promoted alum James Nygren (2009) to New Orleans of the triple-A International League from Jacksonville of the double-A Southern League. He gave up one run in 1.1 innings last night in his first appearance. He was 0-0, 2.00 in seven appearances at Jacksonville, with nine strikeouts in nine innings.
Boston has promoted pitcher Kyle Kraus (2009-10) to Portland of the double-A Eastern League from Salem of the high-A Carolina League. Kraus was touched for four runs in 1.1 innings in his 2014 AA debut; he also played at Portland briefly in 2013.

The Beavers head down to Berkeley today for their weekend series against California. As usual, Knights alum Ben Wetzler (2011) will be Friday night's starting pitcher and Jace Fry (2011) gets the nod on Sunday afternoon.
It's an important weekend (aren't they all?) for the Beavers, who lead the Pacific-12 Conference. If they keep winning series, a repeat Pac-12 championship will be earned, and once again we'll have NCAA regional (and hopefully Super Regional) baseball at Goss Stadium.

Reliever Bryan Granger (2012) allowed no earned runs and had two strikeouts in two innings; shortstop Peter Van Gansen (2013) was 1-for-5 with an RBI; outfielder Nick Torres (2012) was 1-for-4 with a run, and third baseman Jimmy Allen (2011) was 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI for the Mustangs.
* Washington pitcher Brandon Choate, a returnee from 2013, gave up five runs in three innings and was the loser in a 6-3 defeat against Seattle. Reliever Alex Nesbitt, another 2013 returnee, had a strikeout in 1.2 scoreless innings for the Huskies.
* UC Santa Barbara infielder Dalton Kelly was 2-for-4 and outfielder Scott Quinlan was 0-for-2 in a 5-5, 12-inning tie with UCLA. Greg Mahle (2012) had one strikeout in two scoreless innings for the host Gauchos, who do not have lights at their stadium so the game was halted by darkness.

Linfield junior right-hander Chris Haddeland (2014) earned Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time this season on Tuesday. He rebounded from his first loss in more than a year this past Friday with a two-hit, complete-game shutout in top-ranked Linfield's 2-0 victory over Lewis & Clark. He had six strikeouts, no walks and lowered his ERA to 1.09 with his third shutout and fifth complete game of the year.

KELOWNA: The player with the best name in the West Coast League, Weatherford College infielder Scotland Church, will return for another season with the Falcons. Here is more on that story, from the Kelowna website.
The Falcons have also signed four players from Oregon State, including 2013 Knights pitcher Kevin Flemer, no doubt thanks to their connection to former Knights' standout Dylan Jones. The OSU volunteer assistant will assist at Kelowna this summer, joining new head coach Billy Clontz and assistant Richie Jimenez, two more Corvallis alums. Arizona releases alum Carter Bell

Great weekend of baseball in Corvallis. Oregon State's pitching dominated as the Beavers swept their Civil War series against Oregon at Goss Stadium.
Knights alums/future Knights played big roles. Ben Wetzler (2011) won Friday night's game; Jace Fry (2011) won Sunday's game with a one-hitter through eight innings. Scott Schultz (2011) saved Friday and Saturday's wins, and Brandon Jackson (2012) finished up Sunday's game.
Logan Ice (2014) caught all three games and had two RBIs on Sunday. The weather was miserable but that didn't stop nearly 10,000 fans from attending the series and once again Corvallis showed why it is the baseball capital of of Oregon.
Speaking of Goss Stadium, we will see you there in 37 more days, at our June 4 season opener at Goss Stadium against the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet. The Sea Dogs are a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area and former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher.

Former Knights' infielder Carter Bell (2009) has been released by the Arizona Diamondbacks after four seasons in their farm system. The Oregon State product hit .253 (166-655) on 183 career games, with eight homers and 70 RBIs. He played briefly at South Bend in the Midwest League this year, then went on the DL and was released when he came off.
The rumor is the Toronto Blue Jays are promoting alum Matt Boyd (2010) to double-A New Hampshire in the Eastern League after a great start at Dunedin in the advanced-A Florida State League. He is/was 4-0, 0.29 in five starts, with 37 strikeouts and only five walks in five games. He had a career-high 12 strikeouts in a win on Friday; here is more from MLB.com.

Lehigh Valley (AAA International, Phillies) first baseman Jim Murphy (2007) was 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and two RBIs in a 9-7 win over Pawtucket on Sunday to earn Corvallis Knights Minor League Player of the Day honors.

* Erie (AA Eastern, Tigers) designated hitter Dean Green (2008) was 1-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI in a 9-6 loss to Binghamton.
* Jacksonville (AA Southern, Marlins) outfielder Alex Burg was 2-for-4 with two runs in a 10-0 win over Montgomery.
* Jupiter (A Florida State, Marlins) pitcher Scott Lyman (2010) allowed one run and five hits and had five strikeouts in seven innings in a 3-2 loss to Charlotte. He got a no-decision.
* Kannapolis (A South Atlantic, White Sox) first baseman Danny Hayes (2010) was 2-for-4 with a run and a double in a 3-2 loss to Rome.
