Lucky for the Beavers that they are in Tucson this weekend to play the Arizona Wildcats, as it is shaping up to be a wet one here in Corvallis. Oh well, I would expect nothing less for spring break.
Alum Ben Wetzler (2011) will start tonight's game and alum Jace Fry (2011) gets the baseball on Sunday. Let us hope the Beavers can get their act together again, recover from last weekend's pratfall against Arizona State, and win the series.
We are now down to 68 more days until our June 4 season opener at Goss Stadium against the independent Portland Sea Dogs on Science, Engineering & Arts Day, presented by PEAK Internet. The Sea Dogs are a team of former college players from the Portland metropolitan area and former Oregon State star Kevin Gunderson, who played for the old Aloha Knights in 2004, is their projected starting pitcher. Lots of 2014 Knights and alums in action for their college teams on Wednesday. Here's a rundown:
* Oregon's Jordan Spencer pitched a scoreless inning and had one strikeout in a 12-5 win at San Francisco.
* Portland shortstop Mike Lucarelli was 0-for-2 and pitcher Jackson Lockwood gave up four runs in one inning and was the loser in a 7-3 loss to Seattle. Portland's Colin Feldtman (2013) allowed two runs and had three strikeouts in 4.2 innings; second baseman Caleb Whalen (2012) was 0-for-4 and third baseman Cody Lenahan (2013) was 1-for-3 with a run.
* Tacoma CC catcher Josh Latta was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI and pitcher Stephen White gave up two earned runs in .1 innings and had a strikeout in a 7-5 win over Skagit Valley CC.
* Corban shortstop Marc Gallegos was 1-for-5 with a triple and a run in a 7-6 loss to Pacific University.

* Oregon's Stephen Nogosek, a returnee from 2013, allowed one run and had one strikeout in two innings in an 8-4 loss at San Francisco.
* UC Santa Barbara outfielder Scott Quinlan was 0-for-1 and scored a run in a 5-4, 10-inning win at Fresno State. Pitcher Greg Mahle (2012) allowed two runs in two innings for the Gauchos, with three strikeouts.
* San Diego outfielder Grant Melker,, another 2013 returnee, was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in a 13-8 win at UC Riverside. For the Highlanders, pitcher Angel Landazuri (2014) allowed two earned runs and had a strikeout in 1.2 innings; outfielder David Andriese (2010-11) was 1-for-5 with a run; pitcher Antonio Gonzales (2012) allowed no earned runs in three innings, with three strikeouts, and pitcher Dylan Stuart (2011-12) allowed one earned run and had three strikeouts in three innings.

KEVIN KLINE (Dixie State): Another returnee from 2013, Kevin is hitting .284 (33-116) in 31 games, with three homers and 29 RBIs.

We will be headed back over to Goss Stadium tonight for the Oregon State-Seattle University game, weather permitting. The RedHawks feature future Knight Ted Hammond, a right-handed pitcher from Shorecrest High in Shoreline, Wash.
It is not anywhere near as nice in Corvallis today as it was over the weekend. But we are sure they will do their best to get the game in, so we will see you at the ballpark.

Alum D.J. Johnson (2008-09), a right-handed pitcher from Mt. Hood CC and Western Oregon, has signed with the Traverse City (Mich.) Beach Bums of the independent Frontier League. He spent the past three seasons in the Arizona and Tampa Bay organizations and reached the high-A California League before being released. Here is more on that story, from the Traverse City website.
There will be another Corvallis connection to Traverse City this summer. We reported on Monday that broadcaster Kevin Burke, the Virginia Tech grad who was our 2012 play-by-play broadcaster, has been hired as their new radio voice. The Bums open their season on May 16.
Alum Ryan Platt (2008) of UC Riverside, a mainstay in the starting rotation who was second-team all-WCL on our first championship team, also pitched for Traverse City following his affiliated baseball career.

Outfielder Nick Torres (2012) was 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs and a double; third baseman Jimmy Allen (2011) was 2-for-4 with a run, a double and three RBIs; shortstop Peter Van Gansen (2013) was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, and reliever Bryan Granger (2012) pitched a scoreless ninth.

Knights' alums Ben Wetzler and Jace Fry, pitchers on our 2011 West Coast League championship team, are Oregon State's projected starters tonight and Sunday as the Beavers host Arizona State in a big Pacific-12 Conference series at Goss Stadium this weekend.
Should be a good one. Look for alums Scott Schultz (2011), Brandon Jackson (2012), Kavin Keyes (2013) and Gabe Clark (2013) and future Knight Logan Ice (2014) to also play key roles for the Beavers.
We're not sure if alums Caylen Clardy (2012) and Nate Esposito (2012) and future Knight Dan James (2014) are on the 27-man weekend roster. See you at the ballpark!

Alum Rob Dittrick of Pacific University, our 2012 Top Pitcher, has helped the Morley Eagles of the State League in Perth, Australia advance to the Grand Final in that city. They will face the Braves in a best-of-three championship series.
Rob pitched eight-innings of no-hit ball on March 12 in an elimination-game victory over Gosnells Hawks that moved the Eagles into the semifinals. He then pitched a complete-game, 4-0 shutout over the South Perth Cubs on March 17 to even their series 1-1; the Eagles then won the decisive game 1-0 to advance to the finals.
Congrats to Rob, an all-West Coast League player and the WCL's ERA leader (1.10) by almost a full run in 2012.

Linfield junior Chris Haddeland (2014) threw a one-hit shutout to lead top-ranked Linfield to a 5-0 victory over Whitman this past Friday to earn Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week honors. He had five strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 0.80.
Pacific Lutheran sophomore Derrick Mahlum (2014) and George Fox senior Tom Zarosinski (2011, 2013) were nominated but not selected.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have released left-handed pitcher Michael Blake (2010) of Mt. Hood CC and Hawaii. He was drafted in the 16th round in 2011 and played three seasons in their minor-league system, going 4-6 with a 5.07 ERA in 49 games, with 111 strikeouts in 71 innings.

Alum Jimmy Allen (2011) of Cal Poly was nominated for Big West Conference Player of the Week honors for March 9-16 but was not selected. He hit .455 (10-22) with four doubles, a triple, five runs scored and eight RBIs in six games as the Mustangs swept three-game series from Northern Illinois and Wagner.

Hope you all had great weekends. Oregon State sure did, as Knights' alums Ben Wetzler (2011) and Jace Fry (2011) each pitched gems and earned wins as the Beavers swept Utah to start the defense of their 2013 Pacific-12 Conference baseball title.
Wetzler took a no-hitter into the eighth and won on Friday night; alum Scott Schultz (2011) pitched a scoreless ninth. And Fry finished the series with a complete-game three-hit shutout on Sunday, when 2014 signee Logan Ice had three hits and two runs.
The Beavers host Arizona State this weekend. And, high school baseball starts in Corvallis and elsewhere around the state, so take in a game at your local diamond.

The St. Louis Cardinals assigned pitcher Sam Gaviglio (2009) to their minor-league camp. The Oregon State alum was 0-0, 3.38 in three games, with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Also, the Mets assigned pitcher Greg Peavey (2007), another OSU alum, to their minor-league camp. He pitched one scoreless inning in one appearance, with no strikeouts.
Miami assigned Washington State alum Alex Burg, our 2008 MVP, to minor-league camp. He didn't have an at-bat in a big-league game.
Peavey and Burg both reached triple-A in their respective organizations last season.

The Knights have signed redshirt freshman catcher Josh Latta of Tacoma CC to a 10-day contract. Knights' pitching coach Connor Lambert coaches at TCC.
Latta is a 6-foot-2, 220-pounder from Auburn Riverside High in Auburn, Wash. He redshirted at University of Washington in 2013 and then played for the Kitsap BlueJackets in the summer.
He is hitting .200 (2-10) in three games, with no homers and one RBI heading into this weekend's action. He hit .170 (8-47) in 19 games at Kitsap in 2013, with no homers or RBIs.

Several 2014 Knights were in action for their respective college teams on Thursday. Here's a rundown:
* Cypress CC designated hitter Joe Duffin, a returnee from 2013, was 2-for-5 with a homer, two runs and two RBIs in a 5-4 win over Santa Ana.
* Cal Poly pitcher Slater lee gave up four runs, had a strikeout and a no-decision in 1.2 innings of an 11-9 win over Northern Illinois. Nick Torres (2012) was 1-for-2 with two RBIs; Jimmy Allen (2011) was 2-for-4 with an RBI; Alex Michaels (2012) was 0-for-1; Peter Van Gansen (2013) was 1-for-1 and Casey Bloomquist (2013) pitched the final 2/3 innings and got the save.
